Backing up a Firefox Portable 4.0 Profile

Hello:

I use Firefox 3.6.16 on my HDD as well as Firefox Portable 4.0 via a USB Flash Drive on the same PC.

If I see that Firefox Portable 4.0 works fine after customizing it, I'd like to install Firefox Portable to my HDD, possibly after uninstalling Firefox 3.6.16 which is now installed there.

Question:

Is there a way to backup the Profile of Firefox Portable 4 (now on my flash drive in that same folder) so that I can install it into the HDD version of Portable Firefox 4.0 ? I realize that on the HDD installation, Firefox profiles have a different folder than does the actual Mozilla Firefox program. If this can be done, what is the optimal way to back it up and restore it when I make the shift?

Hope this makes sense...

Thanks in advance:

-Eliuri

Ah, the right questions

First, have both version the same. You can't expect to successfully switch and swap otherwise.

Then locate your profile folders in each case. With both versions of Firefox shut down (do not do anything when there's open files), you can freely copy one entire profile over to the other.

The profile in the portable version lives under the FirefoxPortable location such as in x:\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile
The profile in the permanent installation will be just a bit more difficult to find, but you can refer to the Mozilla knowledge base article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Finding_the_profile_folder_on_Windows

You might find this handy:

Or go to the motherlode of profile info:

about:support

If you type that into the URL bar, or go to help>troubleshooting information, there ought to be a button to view the profile folder. I'm not sure what it says on Windows, most likely "Show in Explorer". It will then pop open the profile folder and you can find the file path.

Thanks!

I did not know about about:support. That is much more efficient than Mozilla's way (which I always Google because I don't save the instructions) of searching via the Start Menu for it.

Actually it says "Open Containing Folder" on Windows.

I copy and pasted all the contents from my portable to my hard drive's firefox location and it worked! but there was more files and stuff for my portable version. I pasted all of them in and replaced, but is this ok/to have more files in there? thanks for the help!
