Opera, Portable Edition 11.10 Pre-Release 1

App: Opera Browser
Description: Opera, Portable Edition is a lightweight, customizable browser designed for speed. It's the popular Opera™ web browser packaged as a portable app, so you can take your browser with you.
Current Release: 11.01

What's New: This new release uses a new method for portablization that does not involve moving the profile directory. This speeds up starting and exiting the browser and should alleviate Bug 25510 (profile data loss). It will also now fully portablize settings in the opera prefs so that you can move the app between directories and not lose local homepages and the like. The installer should also detect if Opera was stuck not moving the profile back on last launch when upgrading and move your profile to the proper location.

Please test and post your results as we'd like to get this out as final later today!

Opera 11.10

Hi John, I've been waiting for this since I first lost all my settings a few months ago, and with bated breath since the Opera.com release the other day. It looks good to me so far. It doesn't hang when you close it like Opera 11.01 often does. There have been times when I'd exit Opera 11.01 and come back half an hour later and find my drive's light still flashing, and taskmgr would show Opera still running.

At any rate, so far so good. It seems a little faster. I'll be eagerly awaiting your final release!

Thanks much!

Robert (aka ezechias)

ps. I meant to ask: will this version install right over 11.01 as portable apps normally do? I didn't want to chance it, so installed this test version on a different flash drive.

Yup

Please make a backup of your 11.01 and then do an in-place upgrade. It should just work. And please report back your findings. One odd note, Opera seems to 're-add' the default bookmarks to your bookmarks file during the upgrade from 11.01 to 11.10 if you removed them. Happened on my local install, too.

In place install

Hi John, I did what you said. Backed up my 11.01 and did an in-place install. It went fine. The added bookmarks were just as you said. That happened on my hard-drive install also. No big deal. All my settings seem to have been carried over to 11.10. All my mail is there too.

When I exited 11.10 the first time, it took a couple of minutes to completely stop, but the second time I exited, it took only 16 seconds. I think the couple of minutes the first time was due to the mail. Opera probably had to do something with the mail the first time exiting.

It was very slow loading the upgrade.opera page, and controls seemed a little sluggish at first, but that might not have been opera, as some pages loaded from speed dial almost alarmingly fast. I have Opera set to empty the cache and the cookies every time I close it, but once I've gone to a page, it loads very fast the next time around. Some pages loaded noticeably more slowly, but they were blogs with a lot of flash content.

Maybe more detail than you need. Any way, everything seems to be fine.

Thanks again! Let me know if you want me to try anything else.

Robert

Thanks

Thanks for the info. That's what I needed. It's been working fine in all the internal testing I did including upgrading a stuck install with the profile in the wrong place. I just wanted to confirm with someone else who was having issues before posting it as final.

pre-release same as final ?

Hi John
So I assume the final release is the same as the pre-release, I won't have to re-install the final release?

Thanks again.

Robert
