Sorry if this is redundant, but I think I discovered something.
Tbird on a brand new external device was extremely slow...there was atleast a lag of 2 seconds for everything. I was perplexed because this never happened on another external device.
Then I noticed the computer is NTFS format, while the external device was FAT32 format.
I formatted external device to NTFS and now its working fine.
depending on what external device it is, you may make it non portable this way.
NTFS is not very favourable for external flash devices as it writes more then fat.
format of the virtual file system on a flash drive has not much impact on the sped of the drive, as we can not format the drives file system anyway. Speed is given by the controller inside the device

ottosykora,
Not doubting what you say about NTFS, but none of this is mentioned in any section of https://portableapps.com/support/thunderbird_portable which includes Install, Using and Performance. Is it important enough to be listed there?
https://portableapps.com/node/15257#comment-159313 has a nice summary
