Blender Portable 2.44

I have created a new portable version of Blender, an open source, cross platform suite of tools for 3D creation.

Features:

  • Directory structure is compatible to portableapps.com
  • uses installed settings
  • fancy splash-screen

The selfextracting archive can be downloaded from its current location.

It was done primarily to

It was done primarily to comply more with the structure that John uses as you will not only find the X-Blender from WinPenPack, as you mentioned, but also PortableBlender from FramaKey. With them in mind I wanted to try providing one that fitted with the rest of PortableApps.com.

As with all of Johns Apps, the structure of the files etc is one that everyone comments on etc and will hopefully intergrate with a few of the Apps he has mentioned in the past to be released over the coming weeks or so.

I may be wrong but I think it was a launcher similar to PStart that worked on the PortableApps folder on a pendrive. Either way I did what I originally set out to do and learnt a little along the way.

does this version cause the

does this version cause the application to write to a folder instead of the regestry? that is about the only reason you would make in portable, well for the old ones anyways.

It should write to the .blender folder in the main app tree.

I think the official blender

I think the official blender is portable for a long time. Currently, the importable sides of blender lie in:
1. the external render yafray(www.yafray.org). In fact yafray is portable itself, but blender read the registry for the location of yafray
2. a python installation if you want to use some scripts. this is can be done by set PYTHONPATH to the lib path of python
so can you make a real portable blender that supports yafray and python? thank you

I believe

tanisthalon is working on this.
Side note for tanisthalon: I'll set all the files up on my new server once I get the hosting.

I have this loaded on to my flash drive. I was going to try and convert in to a U3 file so that I could place it inside the U3 launchpad but I ended up just dragging it in to a normal folder-- perhapes I'll get around to figuring out the U3 some other day.

As for the actuall program... ...it seems a tad glitchy. I'm a bit of a newb at blender so it could be that I am simply making some mistake in the program but i;ve noticed a few problems.

1.) Vertex select doesn't seem to work, I don't know why but I cant select any verteces (works fine with face or edge selection)

2.)Mild instability, the program began: "not-reponding" when I cycled through the views, fortunately it recovered and i was able to save.

3.) Some general wierdness in the 3d view; faces and vertices appearing where I didn't draw them, overlapping edges, I think it may simply be the work of a (relatively) slow computer and perfapes a shakey hand and a poor memory but strange nonetheless.

Overall is seems to do the job. It saved the files perfectly to the flash drive. My only concern is that I've read that useing some programs from a flash drive can wear out the card fast. Is blender one of those programs? I hope not...

The best I can offer

The problems you are experiencing unfortunately I cannot provide any help. All I did was provide a launcher for the released zip file, to integrate with the portable apps format at that time.

I was hoping to really get into Blender but it is a little time consuming especially with having a baby in the house. The new version (2.43) is currently in release candidate for testing and may be out very soon.

What I offer at the moment is to visit http://blenderartists.org/forum/ for advice, or visit http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro for guidance.

U3

don't bother with package factory and such to put it on the U3 launchpad; just use the U3 Shortcut Creator: https://portableapps.com/node/2163

New full release

Updated the file to the new full release. The main website for blender has also been updated too. Check out the help file in the installer for more.

PAM Support

Will this eventually be ported over to be supported in PAM? I'd like to see the setup and such work like the current Firefox build, GIMP, etc. that you can download from the application page (https://portableapps.com/apps).

I hope so.

tanisthalon's apps are good, and good program choices as well.

(CamStudio, Gnumeric, Blender, etc)

I also hope they will sometime be hosted here.
