Google Chrome is not installing/updating

I got a problem installing/updating Chrome (all Channels) at my work location.
The PAF-File downloads successfully, but the updater returns a sendRequest-Error on loading the chrome binaries in the second step.

I tried the Skype-Portable installation, too, because it is also downloading additional binaries while installing. And there were no errors. The proxy i am using shouldn't be the problem.

I can exclude site restrictions because i have access to all other google sites.

Is it possible that the binaries-path has changed recently?

Blocked

You're blocked from downloading those specific files from Google at work. That's what a SendRequest error is. Likely, your work doesn't want people installing Google Chrome.

ok, that's a possible

ok, that's a possible reason.

But i wonder that the update procedure did destroy my old Google Chrome App, removing the chrome.exe despite the update error. Maybe you could change the updating process to keep the app working if the update fails? I think there is no temp folder for downloading the additional binary files into.

Platform

If you update via the platform, it won't affect your existing app if you're blocked. It's just a limitation of updating manually via the installer.

Off topic, but nevertheless:

That may be a good occasion to implement a security check before deleting the existing app.
I recall discussing that some time ago and it was no real issue then, because online-installers were used only for development tests (and μtorrent). But the problem still exists. Would it be possible for an upcoming installer-rerelease to check first, if a required online component is accessible - before deleting the whole existing app folder? That would greatly increase the reliability in such cases (and for all the great but (due to licensing issues) possibly never official dev tests).

It's great, that the platform updater handles that already, but I think, there are a whole lot of people that use portable apps standalone.

At Some Point

We'll implement it in the installers at some point. It's a rare occurrence as the few computers blocked from downloading Google Chrome are often similarly blocked from running unknown/USB apps anyway. Via the updater, our platform users are already covered, so it's a relatively small set of users that could still be affected. They can easily fix the issue by using the platform, of course. At some point, we'll need to rewrite a couple sections of the installer to do the download before installing to fix the issue. The download is a part of the installation process at the moment.

Download manually

You can download the chrome installer exe manually (at home or so) and place it next to the online installer and it should pick it up.

Thanks for your help @all, i

Thanks for your help @all, i managed to update it at home and took it back to work.

1.) Is there an official chrome_installer.exe? If you head over to google.com/chrome, you only get an online-installer and not the full/offline chrome_installer.exe. I know sources like filehippo.com, but they are not official.

If you download the chrome installer manually, where to drop it? There must be a workdir for the installation process.

2.) Why not putting the chrome source in the PA-secure-download-section like you did with uTorrent? Users always prefer an installation out of one hand.

thanks, but

thanks, this should work. But this is a deep link without any website navigation to it, intended for developers. Seems Google doesn't want normal users to use the full installer.

Not devs; for online installers :)

That's AFAIK what the Chrome installers download.

the GoogleChromePortable paf.exe has the download location

The GoogleChromePortable paf.exe has the download location you are looking for (for the Google Chrome version for the GoogleChromePortable paf)

(someone much smarter and wiser than I pointed this out. I think this should also work for **all** Portable Apps that use on-line installers.)

1) bring up the file properties for the paf.exe (for me [Windows XP] I just right click on GoogleChromePortable paf.exe and select properties)

2) go to the Version tab

3) in the "Item name:" area (underneath "Other version information") there is a bunch of information. What we are looking for is a item that starts with the name 'PortableApps.comDow' (I don't see the full name) and in this case there are 4 of them). Just click through them and look at the information each one puts in the "Value:" area. One will have the download address for the Installer. In this case (for GoogleChromePortable_15.0.874.102_online.paf.exe), the address is http://dl.google.com/chrome/install/874.102/chrome_installer.exe.

4) highlight and copy the download address and you can now past it into a web browser's address bar (or use a download manager) and download the 'offline' installer.

5) if you put the 'offline' installer into the same folder as the paf.exe installer it will (should) install that program without needing access the 'net Smile

hopefully that makes sense?

nice idea!

Nice idea!

But in Win7 i can't find this item named "PortableApps.comDow'. :/
Nevertheless i managed to download the chrome_installer.exe with KAlug's instructions. However the paf.exe doesn't pick it up. There seems to be no file/CRC-Check before downloading.

The problem that i could actually figure out is that the download from dl.google.com at my work location has a delay of about 3 minutes before i can start downloading. This is why the paf.exe fails. But it is not blocked.

@John: could you implement a file-already-downloaded-check on all online-installers?

Is it possible to add a timeout parameter to the paf.exe's? e.g. google.chrome...paf.exe -t 500000

Already implemented

chrome_installer.exe must be on the same directory as the installer.

already tested

i tested it like this and the installation didn't pick it up.
As John says, the download is a fixed part of the installation.

Are you sure you're installing from

the paf.exe instead of from the Updater?

exactly, fresh installation

i tried both paf.exe directly and via the "add program" wizard of the Platform.
Both didn't do the trick.

paf.exe: GoogleChromePortableDev_16.0.912.4_online.paf.exe
chrome_installer: same version, same folder as paf.exe, source:
http://dl.google.com/chrome/install/912.4/chrome_installer.exe

omg! worked!

thanks! Worked like a charm.

But why it needs the ..._dev.exe? The source at Google is also without _dev.
In conclusion the paf.exe downloads the chrome_installer.exe and renames it in a second step to ..._dev.exe and continues installing?^^ Makes no sense to me.

Would love to see this hint in the Readme.txt either.

Multiple channels

Maybe this way people can have the installers for multiple channels of Chrome available offline.

Correct

It needs to be _dev and the beta needs to be _beta for when folks update the Stable, Beta and Dev channels all at the same time via the updater. The files are all downloaded to the same place. This also permits a user to have their own manually-setup offline installers for all 3 channels in the same location.

Up

Hello,

Same issue here. Running GoogleChromePortable_27.0.1453.110_online.paf won't succeed.

I don't get it. Why does the portableapps.com does not provide the software it tells it does and instead needs a dirty download chain ? Sourceforge does the same with their direct link which aren't ! It's crazy to say you host a soft when you don't.

Thank for all the great portable softs hosted here by the way.

No Block Here

It downloads Google Chrome from Google directly as part of the setup from here. If that fails, it's either Google blocking you or a company/university firewall. And it's working 100% fine here. What is the error you get?

Anyone including Google Chrome in a portable package is doing it 100% illegally, just like packaging up Adobe Photoshop would be illegal.

Why not remove GoogleChromePortable then ?

Hi,

Thank you for answering.

Of course the issue comes from my company network VPN/FW/PROXY/ETC. It's was not quite my point.

Let's try it another way :

Why not remove GoogleChromePortable from portableapps.com if like you said it is illegal ?

Google Chrome Portable Is Legal

I was referring to random 'Portable Chrome' packages you may find elsewhere that bundle Chrome in an installer or zip file. Those are illegal.

Google Chrome Portable is legal and works just fine with most PCs with a properly configured proxy, etc. It won't work in an environment where IT has specifically blocked downloads of Google Chrome, though.
