no comments on certain apps

I've updated this comment, see below.

Org (trimmed for size): Some apps can be commented, some can't. I checked out Infrarecorder, there were no comments, no negative comments seemed a good thing, I installed it. As luck would have it right after install I run win media player and it does not play certain formats anymore. I try realplayer, same thing. So I wanted to comment/look for a reply on the Infrarecorder page but I can't comment. Why? If I had read that the app might mess with my settings and/or codecs I wouldn't have installed it. Now I've wasted two hours getting everything to work again.

Update: I had liked Infrarecorders interface and functionality, I had tried it first on a HD, but as another user says further below, there is no reason why it should have interfered with my settings and I asked if that was a coïncidence that it did? So I installed Infrarecorder again and this time everything worked perfectly. Strange as it is, it was indeed a coïncidence, and I simply can't figure out what it was. Point is, Infrarecorder is now installed and everything is fine. And it's a damn fine app too.

Commenting vs support forums

Hello,

None of the app pages, the ones like this, allow commenting. Comments are allowed on news releases, which is probably what you're thinking of. If you're having a problem with Irfanview Portable, please give as much detail as possible so we can try to reproduce it, and make the post in the Other Apps Support forum. You can easily move your original post there by editing it.

Hope that helps!

Would it be a good thing if users could comment apps? Although I guess this would in some cases take up too much space unless one would limit comments to 150 signs. Or instead of space-hugging comments an app rating system without comments such as a star rating by user-friendliness, functionality and the like as some download sites use? All things considered, maybe it's just fine as is.

Infrarecorder

Sorry, but InfrarecorderPortable (which you mention specifically) burns CDs and DVDs. It isn't a media player so it won't make changes to media default programs, and even if it was, since it is a PortableApp here, it wouldn't leave any changes to the host computer.

Look somewhere else for the source of your problem. From my experience with RealPlayer (which you also mention specifically), it wants to take over the entire computer and forces all sorts of changes to the computer. Further, since it isn't a ProtableApps.com app, I'm sure that it doesn't play nice with the host computer's settings.

How about making sure of the issue before throwing mud?

I installed Infrarecorder,

I installed Infrarecorder, then I had a problem with wmp, then I uninstalled Infrarecorder, my problem was gone. Not that I would know why but how about that for a coïncidence?

But...

Not to nitpick but PortableApps apps don't install. That's why they are portable.

Do note too that PortableApp app changes to the system are removed when the apps are closed. If you run other apps while the PortableApp is still loaded there could be an impact but properly closing the PortableApp app should resolve that problem.

You are of course spot on,

You are of course spot on, it's the coïncidence that led me to err. I've now corrected that wrong opinion in my original posting.

"Not that I would know" is an EXCELLENT reason to scream from the rooftops that the sky is falling in.

Two things

As J Neutron said, Infrarecorder Portable shouldn't make any changes to your PC after you've exited properly (i.e. your computer doesn't crash). If you think something happened and it was Infrarecorder Portable's fault, then, reiterating what Gord said, try the support forums for assistance.

As for the other thing, I strongly recommend (as well as most users) VLC Media Player Portable. It plays every video file out there. Everything. It's compatibility is unmatched, as far as I know, by any other media player out there. All the codecs are in the package already, so you'll never need to worry about problems playing files again.
