CintaNotes Portable 1.8.1 Development Test 1

Application: CintaNotes
Category: Office
License: Freeware, permission granted by publisher
Description:

CintaNotes is a small and easy to use personal note management application. It is designed to be your indispensable assistant in the daily task of collecting numerous pieces of information, whatever they may be: your own thoughts and ideas, book and article excerpts, job postings, famous quotes, research data, curious facts, Wikipedia definitions, blog posts, important news, you name it.

It lets you quickly jot down and tag any piece of useful information that you come across while reading documents or surfing the Net - just select the text and press Ctrl+F12. With CintaNotes, this is really all it takes to make a note! CintaNotes does not clutter your workspace with "sticky notes", all notes are neatly organized in an easily navigable list. And unlike browser-based tools like Google Notebook or Firefox plug-ins CintaNotes does not require a web browser to work - it works with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat - the "text-capturing magic" works with all applications that can copy text to clipboard!

Retrieving information is also trivial: just open CintaNotes and start typing, and only notes which contain the text you type will remain in the list. More sophisticated search criteria are also supported, like searching by title or by URL the note was taken from.

Initial review
  • help.html: missing <div class="footer"></div> at the end
  • Other\Source\LauncherLicense.txt: missing
  • Other\Source\Readme.txt: replace **AppID** with CintaNotes (and reformat the lines to stay under 80 columns after you do that)
  • Other\Help\Images: needs update to the new logo
  • App\AppInfo\appinfo.ini: better description? Also, I don't think that a copyright notice is a trademark
  • App\AppInfo\Launcher\CintaNotesPortable.ini: language variables (%PAL:PortableApps.comLocaleglibc%) doesn't have a PAL: prefix on 2.1.2; put a % after CheckIfExists=; unnecessary zh_CN and zh_TW in [LanguageStrings]?

Previously known as kAlug.

Corrupted app template

Looks like I had a corrupted app template in my copy of the dev. toolkit.

I've fixed the issues relating to that, and updated the template from a fresh copy.

appinfo.ini: I'd say that's a better description, eh?

LanguageStrings: zh_TW is needed, as the app doesn't recognize zh_TW as being the same as zh_tw

Default?

If you have a default browser set, and hit F1, or click on the Help > Help link, it should open the local "Help" file.

Please let me know if this is not the case.

Will Not Remember Alternative Directory

Gord,

Well done with making CintaNotes portable. I like the application very much, and use it as a quick & dirty alternative to more comprehensive products including AllMyNotes or TreeDBNotes. I have paid to register the app.

However, I use CintaNotes in its native, portable mode (ie: unzip into the PortableApps directory on my USB key) simply because in its PortableApps.com version, it will NOT remember if the database is moved to any other location on the USB key. I try to keep all of my data in DATA_*Product* subdirectories, as they are more easily backed up this way. The bare native portable version does remember alternative database locations, and works successfully on other computers. No doubt a simple portable fix. Can you have a look at this?

Regards,

Kim

Not sure what you want

Kim,

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking for.

The way this works, the cintanotes.db file is moved from your Data directory to App\CintaNotes when CintaNotes Portable is started, and back when it is closed. This is expected behaviour. You can easily backup the data in the Data directory using the backup function in the PortableApps.com Platform.

If I move cintanotes.db to another location, and select it using File>Notebook, that selection is remembered the next time I open CintaNotes Portable.

Are you experiencing something different?

Problems?

Gord,

I am a registered user of CintaNotes, and run it from my USB key. I have made a comment or two in the past about your portable version, and have just verified that 1.7.1 dev test 2 still has the same issues. So, here goes:

If I run CintaNotes "bare". That is, just download the zip file from the CintNotes website into the PortableApps directory on my USB key, the application will remember both the skin and database file (which I store in a separate directory to the application itself) when run again. Everything is happy.

If I install your portable version, the chosen skin is not remembered next time CintaNotes is run. Further, CintaNotes "forgets" where my database file is kept. Now, I would prefer a PortableApps version, because of all of the advantages that brings - discussed on these forums many times. But unfortunately, your portable version appears to lack some of the attractions of simply unpacking the native zip file into a directory on my USB key.

While I understand that I can FILE|OPEN my data file, when I simply unpack the zip file into a directory, CintaNotes will automatically open my last data file. I do not need to FILE|OPEN it. Frankly, I prefer it to work that way. Try it out. The skin choice not being "sticky" is also a bit annoying.

I hope I have been clear. I do not wish to discourage your efforts - quite the opposite. I think this is what I was trying to communicate last time I provided some feedback. Could you investigate your saving of preferences between runs? This is a great little application, and well worth persevering with.

Regards,

Kim
