I would say

Your school has a proxy. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information > Internet Settings > Internet Explorer > Connectivity > Proxy

Or try the ProxyGet utility.

Or try the ProxyGet utility. It's on this site somewhere.

Firefox Portable Support

It's on the Firefox Portable Support page:

Foxy Proxy

I also use Portable Firefox at my school, as the computers there are still running IE6... I would recommend the FoxyProxy extension to solve your problem. It allows you to create more than one proxy, and to select which one you want to use without having to change it on Firefox every single time: all you have to do is click on the FoxyProxy button on the toolbar and select a preset proxy :).
