MozBackup?

Please, is there an "official" portable version of MozBackup? One that will back up up both portable and non-portable Firefox, Thunderbird, Lightning? Or does anyone know if it's possible to install the "standard" MozBackup in a portable way - without touching the Registry etc. etc.?

I have Googled quite hard but to no avail; perhaps I just need new spectacles but ...

it is portable

it is portable by itself, and it always was and it works for portable or installed versions of firefox and thunderbird, it always did so.

It is just one exe, there no installation and you can simply copy it to a folder under portable apps and it works. No need for special portabilizing it.

Requires Admin Password

Hmmm. Then why does it ask me for the Administrator's password when I run it as a non-admin? That's normally the behaviour of a program that's trying to do something to the Registry or to some other non-portable place on the system.

Must Have Had The Wrong Version

Hmmm again. I re-googled MozBackup and this time I found a .zip containing version 1.5.1. This does not ask for any passwords and seems to be portable as you said. Yesterday the one I found was 1.4.10 and this definitely asks for a password - it's a single .exe, not a .zip.

The .zip contains several files including a .exe and a .dll. I imagine the older version is some sort of installer but I don't want to run it in case it does something unpleasant.

be careful

in such case.

I am using mozbakcup since versions 1.1x and had never any question for admin password etc. (thought only the current version really works)

Where ever this older copy is from, it may contain more then the mozbackup executable in its original form.
If there is delzip.dll delievred as well, it is ok, this is used by the exe sometimes too.

they have their repo on sourceforge. You can reach them for example via http://www.mozbackup.de/

The registry is divided in to

The registry is divided in to different parts. Each windows account user is given their own "HCKU" root key, where applications can write to freely without admin privs. Anywhere else usually requires the admin password.

Thanks

Thank you Otto Sykora and vf2nsr. I'm happy now that the version I have is safe and portable.
