Google Chrome won't update

This has happened a few times over, and it keeps happening. Whenever PA.com sees an update for Google Chrome, it starts downloading (and steal focus!) only to discover that the update is "not valid and cannot be installed" by displaying a message about it (and stealing focus a second time!)

Again, this is not the first time. This appears to happen at each major release for Chrome. If the download is corrupt somehow, please fix it. If the download is not there yet somehow, don't update. Either way it's bothersome...

Btw, it is reproducible. Every time PA.com starts, it wants to update Chrome, as long as the update is available and broken.

All Working

I just checked and all 3 versions of Google Chrome Portable are working properly in the app store/updater (Stable, Beta and Dev). There have been no issues with any of them for months. If you're seeing an error now, it's not on our end. Either your ISP is cutting things off, you're using a software firewall that breaks them (see: ESET), Google is sometimes blocking you (it downloads Chrome live from Google) or you're hitting an unreliable SourceForge mirror for the portable bit. If you try to update just Chrome Stable now, does it do one short download (portable bit) and then one long one (Chrome bit from Google)?

The updater is supposed to take focus. It only comes up as you launch the platform (within about 15 seconds and only if you have the platform set to check for updates on launch... this will be shortening to just a couple seconds shortly due to a rewritten updater check). Or it comes up when you specifically run it. It doesn't randomly run at other times. If you don't want it to check on launch, you can disable it in Options.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
