Pidgin: Purple Twitter

Not directly a Pidgin Portable query but I thought I might find others with the same problem - and possibly an answer - here.

I use Purple Twitter with Pidgin Portable and as of about midday yesterday it stopped working. Each time I tried to log in I got an authentication failure. Purple Twitter is properly authorised on my account and I had made no configuration changes.

Now I'm aware that Twitter has made some changes to its security and is possibly making more changes. Has anyone else experienced this problem and, if so, have they found an answer?

I've checked www.pidgin.im and the various third party addon sites but I can't see any recently updated versions of the Twitter protocol.

No Longer Supported

Like most unofficial Twitter clients, Purple Twitter uses the old 1.0 Twitter API. This was discontinued yesterday. All apps that rely on it on any platform (Windows, Mac, Android, etc) will no longer work.

Apps must be rewritten for the 1.1 Twitter API which includes limits on accesses and total users for a given app (limited to 100,000 unless Twitter gives you permission for more... which they won't).

Bottom line, get used to the official Twitter apps and website only. Twitter doesn't want other apps out there.

Shame

Very much as I expected, but disappointing nonetheless.

I've used Pidgin Portable for a number of years for Live, Google Talk and other protocols.

I've never really taken to RSS, or found a client which provided information and alerts in the way I wanted, so I tend to use Twitter for that purpose - following accounts like PortableApps, DropBox and a few others to find out about new releases, system problems, etc.

That wasn't broke, and didn't need fixing. But of course it is now Sad

I'm trying out the chat feature in Thunderbird (which supports Twitter with the Additional Chat Protocols addon) but so far it doesn't seem anywhere near as good as having Pidgin pop up an alert each time I get something from someone I follow on Twitter.

Switch to RSS

Anything that adds Twitter support will likely drop it as soon as they hit 100k users. And that 100k users isn't users as it applies to 100k installs and is hit much more quickly than developers suspect. Twitter is for use on the website and official clients only these days.

RSS, on the other hand, is an open format that anyone can use. Our RSS feed has a post for every app update and has for longer than Twitter has existed. Twitter even used to have RSS feeds of accounts for people who wanted to follow them (not sure if they still do).

Twitter RSS

As I understand it there's no longer any straightforward way to get an RSS feed from Twitter but there are various kludges out there for doing it.

No Need For Most

There's no need for most sites as they make an RSS feed available (we have several).
