URGENT: checkboxes per category in download manager

please, pLEAse, ( swear words come to mind )

please do this 5 second coding job!
put a check box beside each category to check all of that category.

( i'd ask for a ctrl range selection like in win explorer too but far out. at least do the above one.

have you tried to check all boxes beside games?
you still need to manually uncheck 50 something boxes.

.......................
thanks for your time.

Can't, but

The component used to implement the list of checkboxes doesn't support this, so we can't.

But, we'll be reworking the app store soon to add similar functionality.

Lastly, please only use a word like 'urgent' for something like a security issue or a major breaking bug report. A relatively minor feature request wouldn't really qualify.

Use of word URGENT

not sure I agree with you.
The is a MAJOR BUG / equivalent.

worthy of the word urgent in my view.

It is totally unacceptable to require a user to manually select every single app, or deselect 50+ games when they select all.

I reported this months ago. It is unacceptable to be frank.

so if you are going to take that tone... swear words come to mind again.

regards.

[EDIT] Previous time I reported it:
Forum Title: Download Method Alternatives (Issues, and Suggestions)

... It is only reasonable to supply 'all' sourceforge hosted files as a single zip. This way the extremely slow, and unsatisfactory portableapps.com download manager can be used only for those other applications as mentioned in the referenced forum thread.

Objection

I strongly object to your use of the word URGENT. Grow up. To make it worse the person complaining seems to be mainly interested in games.

I'm inclined to say f*ck off.

re wm ...

yawn.

Games: try reading.

URGENT. Please fix portable apps to be 'reasonably' usable when choosing programs.

Actually, no

"To make it worse the person complaining seems to be mainly interested in games."

OP
"or deselect 50+ games when they select all."

DEselect means she doesn't want the games, she just wants ALL the other free stuff. Not that she uses or needs all the other free stuff she just wants it because it is free.

Another option that would solve her problem, charge $1 per download. She won't be checking All any more.

LOL

Not Urgent

As I said, this is a basic feature request for a very small niche of users that doesn't impact every day functionality at all. It definitely doesn't qualify as urgent. Think of things that severely impact all users in a negative way (Platform no longer able to update at all for Asia, something actually infected by a virus and not a false positive, a publisher sneaking adware into their portable app and auto-installing on local machines). Those would be urgent. Having to click once per app on the initial install one time is not urgent. Plus, as I already said, I'm working on an app store rewrite. It may be more Google Play-esque, meaning you won't even have anything to right-click and select ALL anyway.

I already fully responded to you in the other thread, linked here as proof: https://portableapps.com/node/38971

Doing all downloads as a zip is silly as it would be out of date within a few days and a mess to keep updated. As already explained, the PA.c Updater download component uses the Windows APIs, so it's no different from downloading in Internet Explorer. If your local free SourceForge mirrors are being slow, please get in touch with SourceForge to let them know. We'll likely be rolling out a paid option for folks who like faster downloads at some point that we'll be paying the bandwidth on (even for open source).

Re Not Urgent by John

hi,

John said "Doing all downloads as a zip is silly as it would be out of date within a few days and a mess to keep updated. "

(1) there are valid reasons for not wanting update features.
(2) there are valid reasons for offline, and 'live disk' uses for portable applications.

John said "I'm working on an app store rewrite. It may be more Google Play-esque, meaning you won't even have anything to right-click and select ALL anyway."

(1) what is the point of having a portable apps download 'helper' if it isn't any better than me saving the download links on each website, and downloading them by clicking on each link?

There is very little to be gained through the download functionality aside from any revenue and statistics gained by controlling those features.

***
I can only conclude that you intentionally designed the download check boxes to force users to click on each program individually so that you can get statistics.
***

( I am a software developer too, so I know that implementing check boxes per category is not an unreasonable thing to ask. )

As Stated, You Can Help

You have to download it sooner or later, so it doesn't really matter if you download a zip file or run the platform and use the app store to pick your apps. (Fun fact, you'll be able to pick pre-selected suites of apps in the app store and customize them shortly, too).

The issue with pre-built full suites of apps is that they're a pain to keep up to date. I know because I used to do it, so I'm speaking from first-hand experience. So, folks would be annoyed that an outdated copy of Firefox or Sumatra PDF or another app was included and we'd need to update it, which required a decent amount of work and time.

Then there's the issues with upgrades. The suites of apps didn't support upgrading the previous suite because the programmatic upgrade handling is built into the individual PA.c Installers. So, each installer needs to run individually. Which is why the updater runs them all individually in silent mode. With the platform handling all app installs and upgrades, including installing/updating a suite of apps, it will always work.

Next, regarding the app store, the majority of users prefer an app store that is browsable and searchable and you can click to download apps and it downloads it in the background while you continue to pick more apps. That's why iOS and Android work that way. That's why we'll work that way, too. You won't be going to a website, downloading installers one at a time, running them one at a time, and then clicking through each installer. You'll be browsing an app store, deciding you want an app, and clicking one button. Or, in the case of a pre-selected suite, one button for 10 to 200 apps to all automatically get downloaded and installed.

As for the right-click and select bits, as I already told you, we're using a pre-built component. If you're a software developer, too, and this is an urgent and critical feature, please help out. It's the Embedded Lists plugin for NSIS and you can find the source for our version in this folder on SourceForge. It's the NOSORT version from 2012. Note that the categories are not actually categories in terms of the way the list handles them, it's just a workaround I came up for display purposes in the updater by using a hidden column for sorting and swapping in a different image for the disabled checkbox image. The plugin doesn't use standard Windows checkboxes, it has its own. So, you'd need to likely create a hierarchical format and proper checkboxes first. Additionally, we've been looking for someone to work on the plugin for a while because the checkboxes don't work with keyboard navigation and are, thus, screen reader incompatible.
