Wondering why http://www.portablefreeware.com posts many more applications, frequently, than Portableapp.com? There are a lot of apps. that are indeed capable and under the license terms available to be made portable.
What I also noticed is there are developers here that have made applications portable, but not included in the Apps. list. Is it because they need to be verified by John first? Have the standard opening GUI applied? etc...?
Appears this site is lagging and other sites Ceedo, portablefreeware, u3 are moving further ahead. Maybe more help is needed here. Maybe the keys to some of the tools need to be trusted to some other developers.
Btw, just an observation. Yes, I know free free free. Before someone gets off their high horse and rants.
All this is constructive criticism, do what you want with it.
I'm pretty sure the reason for this is that the apps at http://www.portablefreeware.com are either small apss that are portable as is, or are close to portable and have instructions on how to make them portable.
While this site focuses on taking larger apps that weren't originally designed to be portable and making them that way with special loaders and new directory structures etc.
I hope for a day where this site is unnecessary, because the software developers are all making their apps portable, as with those on portablefreeware.com.
Until then, John and company are doing an invaluable service to the community in making apps portable that would not otherwise be.
What the portablefreeware.com guys do is look for apps that are already portable. I noticed how my own game magically appeared in their list (it was a good thing), they don't really port anything themselves as far as I know.
PortableApps.com bothers to porting and giving a good interface, I think that they may not have quantity but they do have quality.
U3 is full of shareware and propietary stuff, and some of their strong points were actually made here... So I rather not think they are doing well.
Did not hear of Ceedo before so I'll try taking a look first.
Ceedo is shareware, sorry but it can't win there...
I also notice work being done by developers or others that conform to the guidelines and are not added to the Applications list.
To me, appear to be shrugged off and visitors are forced to keep asking when there are hardly any updates to the list.
A suggestion would to at least get a section with links dedicated to these other applications.
Also, a good faq plugin in Drupal would help.
Basically, this site is centered around John's work, which is making large, popular programs portable, whereas portablefreeware.com is a listing site.
Vintage!
Portablefreeware.com is a site. It is a resource. If you want a quick app to do a task, you look there.
Portableapps.com isn't a site. It is a community. It is a place where you can meet and talk to the people developing portable apps and launchers.
IMHO.

Good opinions. All the applications on this site I can get elsewhere, portable. So, besides the menu and applications with John's touch what sets this site apart from the others? Visitors are always looking for updates, new applications, something exciting.
I trust the apps on this site and will only download from here since they are virus/scumware free. i will only download from another site if the site is recommended here first......I have found alot of apps that have scumware in them.....

Explain scumware.
I think a previous post was answered where people only want to get portable apps. here as they are "trusted." So, why not make it more open to other developers to link /host their apps. here?
They have to comply with sourceforge rules. GPL and such. No commercial ware. Plus, this is not a repository of portable apps. This is a personal site that John setup for his vision of portable opensource apps. I appluad the fact that there is only the good apps here and not a bunch of crap. I have taken only one or two apps from portablefreeware because they don't have anything I need.
I think John has mentioned in the past that he would like to eventually be able to open up the site more developers and even host some apps here as well. Until then though this is all you will get unless John posts more up here. Constant bitching like this is what pisses off people who bring the free apps to the public. It is free. Don't complain that there is not more or that this site is not like others. John and the other developers put forth there own time to run this place and rovide you with there goodness. If you complain to much, they may stop and then what? You will be out completely all the apps that are available here.

Hey dipshit... I wasn't complaining just pointing out what I've noticed on the site and compared to what other sites offer as well. Ever hear of constructive criticism? Apparently you can't handle it.
As stated in the forum guidelines, name-calling and similar activities are not permitted here. Please check the attitude.

Unlike yourself, I can take constructive criticism. My job actually depends on it. This site is different than other sites and there really is no comparison that can be done. Comparing this site to portablefreeware is like comparing a Dodge to a restraunt. One has offerings only and the other has both offerings and a feel behind it.
BTW, great show of Maturity you have displayed... Nice name choice as well. Personally if I had a site like this and someone of your caliber showed up, you would have been banned very quickly. Thank John that he is more patient than I with minor iritances like yourself.

A#$hole.
You must be a poor person if your job depends on constructive criticism because you don't know what it is.
You have been temporarily banned for a period of one day for failure to abide by the forum guidelines. This isn't a personal attack, simply an enforcement of the rules that everyone here must abide by. As you have contributed helpfully in the past, the ban is only temporary and will be lifted tomorrow. When lifted, please refrain from name calling and personal attacks or your account will be removed.

Moreover, the fact that John has countenanced your bad 'tude as long as he has, and hasn't at all taken personal offense at the 'criticism' itself PROVES that he can "take" constr. criticism....
(Bravo, John.)

You learned how to read and analyze what was written you would see that constructive criticism was not directed at only John.
As you have setup a second account to get around the one day ban -- which is also a violation of forum guidelines -- you are now permanently banned. If you wish to make a case for why this ban should be lifted, please send an email to the contact address with your reasons why.

I am in desktop support client facing so I must change per the directions I receive in order to keep the customer happy. I have guidelines to follow but also must adjust per the constructive criticism I receive in order to accomplish all of my tasks as per the contract requirements.
I will continue this no further as I am above this level of "banter."

they aren't portable or as portable as they are if you get them here.
I think this site/community is huge fun (in fact its my most visited site)and a great idea supported by great people.

John does have a "Real Life" ™ and as such he is very busy. He is on his way towards adding others apps.
On that subject, John, how long?
