GIMP Portable won't let me install to "C:\ProgramFiles"

GIMP Portable (2.10) can't run if installed to "C:\ProgramFiles". Please fix by allowing the program to run from within "C:\ProgramFiles" by either a) copying the GIMP Portable directory to a temporary location within the current User's directory and running from there, or b) Run from "C:\ProgramFiles" if the current user is an Administrator.

Highly unlikely, sorry

We used to allow running any app from Program Files, but some of them forced us to change.

Some apps (Chrome is one I believe, but there are others) always run in local mode when placed in Program Files, regardless of what we do to make them portable.

To prevent the weird user experience (especially for less technical users) of some apps allowing installation/running in Program Files but blocking others, we instead blocked Program Files completely as an installation/running location - this folder should only ever be used for locally installed programs anyway.

So, until the apps that restrict us change, I'm sorry to say but you will have to change the location from which you are trying to run GIMP.

Manual override?

Is there a way I can manually override this for myself?

By Design

This is by design.

No applications using the PortableApps.com Launcher support running from the Program Files directory.
Here's an excellent explanation of why this restriction is in place.

There is an undocumented method of using this directory if you poke around the Launcher repository, although, sorry, I won't provide any further direction on where it's found or how to make use of this method.

What about allowing a user to

What about allowing a user to install to Program Files, but copy and execute the program to and from the User 's directory upon the time of actually opening the program?

Not feasible

This is not a feasible solution, particularly for an application the size of GIMP Portable.

If you're looking to install in Program Files, you'd be better off installing the official GIMP from gimp.org

Feedback

I would suggest that the Portable Apps Platform give users a pop-up message explaining just that if they run into the same error I did Smile

Create a folder

Create folder on the root of C named portable apps. Example: C:/PortableApps. This is how I use apps locally on my pc. The install will find that directory as it matches the instructions in the installer
