Just to say that I'm a satisfied user of TextMaker (WP) and PlanMaker (Spreadsheet) from Softmaker.
These are non-free, but inexpensive (69 USD or 69 EUR for both apps on WIN32 AND Linux), and IMO excellent.
They are relatively small (about 35Mb for both), and already portable with a simple installation routine described here:

No financial link, just a satisfied user. Well worth paying for.
I know it is a little more as far as size but, what can that software do that OO cannot?

Personally I found it faster and more reliable than OO to the extent that it was worth paying for. I also run TextMaker and PlanMakre at work, finding them far more generally reliable and less of a resource hog than the genuine Office 2003 we're provided with.
That aside, it's USP is really in the compatibility area:

If you're a student the academic pricing makes it even cheaper, but you still can't beat OO for price
(and I do think that OO is a still a magnificent advert for OSS)
It's way faster. And I like it's interface more.
And 35 MB...uncompressed. IIRC I had a
