Substitute Drives

I made this app when SmithTech mentioned something on substituting drives. When you run this handy little thing it will substitute or "clone" your current drive letter with another drive letter that you choose. For example, I always substitute for T, so whenever I download something, let say from uTorrent which needs a fixed drive letter, I can point it over to T, and it will be available 95+% of the time. It will have an icon on the system tray to remove the substitution and save your last used letter to a txt file. It starts looking for a free drive letter starting at F to avoid a most false detections of a dvd/cd drive letter.
So, here's the source code and the exe. It is compiled using AutoIt. And a thanks goes out to Ryan for hosting the downloads and at Patrick Patience for the initial hosting. (removed the old links, see below for the new version)
Enjoy.

PS. I'm not good at creative names and/or icons, they're just functional.

UPDATE 5/5/07: Changes: Changed the txt to an ini. Instead of saving the last drive used every time it changes it's now your favorite drive letter, in other words it will not change between uses. Also, it has the "silent" option on startup and on exit. If your favorite drive letter is available, it will not prompt you when you make a substitution, or when you exit or remove the substitution it will not show a confirmation message. You can change these settings in the ini file.
Download 2.0 Source included.

Thanks

I really didn't change anything in the original code, except for adding the support for the txt file. But it's good to know that c: is not showing up anymore, and I'm glad you like it.

how does this differ from

how does this differ from using subst.exe (as described in the other thread)??

I haven't downloaded your exe file yet as you mentioned you will be making a newer versiona available. Plus, I want to understand what's happening before I do anything. I'm not a programmer, so explain this s l o w l y.

Try it now

Yesterday Ryan deleted the old version and uploaded the new one, it's just that I could not post the link of the new version, but it's up there now. Try it out.

Also, I'm not a programmer either, and I really don't understand coding that much, so I'll explain it the way I would understand it as well. SmithTech explained how to use subst.exe (which comes with windows). What I did was create an app that you can carry around with you and have on your menu (whichever one it might be), and launch it from there. It will prompt you which drive letter you want to use, you select a drive letter, and if it's not being used then you have a clone of your device with a new drive letter. Before you unplug your device, click on the small icon in the systray and select "remove substitution". That's all it does. With this substitution you can use programs that ask for a fixed drive letter, instead of a relative path. And here's a tip, Windows assigns drive letter starting from A:\. Most mapped drive letters on networks start from Z:\ and come back. So for better chances stay somewhere in the middle of the alphabet when assigning the new drive letter. This way your favorite drive letter will be available on most computers.

Can someone upload this elsewhere please?

I think this guy has used up his bandwidth. Can someone please upload Substitute_Drive_2.0.paf.exe elsewhere?

Too many people downloaded Toucan from that site on Friday and the site went down. Wait till they get it back up and you'll be all set.

Actually

Espreon's suites took my site down, it wasn't my bandwidth, just an overload on the server.

Yeah...

Ryan's site, which is the one that the file is hosted on, is down. That's why I'm trying to find someone who has the file already that can email it to me.

Well.

arqbrulo, I don't know which one this is, but this is the version I had in my inbox from before, it's not the paf.exe one, ryan sent me the newest one, but it's being blocked out, and I asked Ryan to send and rename it again, but I don't think my e-mail sent, so here's the version I have, hopefully, Ryan, you'll see this and you can rename the file without .exe on the end, thanks.

Sorry Patrick

Sorry Patrick, but the fact is that I didn't think about keeping an "original" version for myself. Also, the paf version is the right one. I'll now download my own program to keep it for backup in case something like this happens again.

An integrated, automatic thing?

Would it be possible to install and use it, so it'll run automatically when the PortableApps launcher starts, or something like that?

More or less

You can only autorun one program when a drive is inserted, so what you can do is create one program that launches many programs. I really don't think I can implement anything like that into this program, you would have to do it by yourself. Probably the most simple way to do it is with a batch file.

change drive letters

First, read this. Now, I really don't know how many people are really using this program, but those of you you are using it, would you like to have the option to change the drive letter rather than substituting it? Of course, this will only happen on computers where you are logged in as administrator.
