Windows 7/8 Users: Does LibreOffice 7.5.0 run on your machine?

Are any folks out there using LibreOffice 7.5.0 on Windows 7, 8.0, or 8.1 successfully? It crashes with an error in kernelbase.dll while starting up on both our 32-bit and 64-bit Win 7, 8, and 8.1 test virtual machines. This is what's preventing our 7.5.0 release.

I asked on Twitter, too.

This occurs on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 even with Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows manually installed. The LibreOffice local installer attempts to install this as well but doesn't always succeed.

One Saying Works Okay

Hi John,

I asked on Windows 7 Forums and also at OpenOffice Forums. Have one response so far at Windows 7 Forums:

7.5.0 Build Issue

I've confirmed that LibreOffice 7.5.0 fails to run on clean, fully updated Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, either 32-bit and 64-bit, while running as a guest in either VirtualBox 6.1.42 or 7.0.6, on either an Intel or AMD-based system. Even if you install the required Universal C runtime ahead of time. It also crashes in safe mode. Took about 10 hours to work through all of that and a bunch of possible workarounds.

I've tested the current 7.5.1 RC build and that does work in all above cases without issue. So it appears there is an issue with 7.5.0 on legacy Windows systems. I'm awaiting release schedule details on whether to push 7.4.5 to our Fresh channel in the meantime or wait for 7.5.0 and push that.

For What it is Worth — One Fine on Windows 8

Hi John,

Got a response on OpenOffice Forums with one user reporting that 7.5.0 is running fine on his Windows 8. Has me kind of thinking if the issue is actually because you are doing your tests in a virtual machine.

Use Portable Apps on both Flash Drive and HDD/SSD.

Other Reports

There are other reports of the 32-bit version being broken on Windows 7/8 in bugtracker from folks not using VMs. So, at least we know it's not VM-specific.

X-LibreOffice 7.5.0.3 x64 works perfectly

Hi John,
I use the winPenPack's build of LibreOffice 7.5.0.3 - 64 bit, on Windows 7 SP1 and it works perfectly.
I have manually updated a previous installation of wPP's LibreOffice x64.

How To Update:
1. I have extracted the LibreOffice 7.5.0.3 installer with UniversalExtractor2 Portable (Bioruebe version) and updated the '\X-LibreOffice\Bin\LibreOffice 7' folder
2. I have moved Visual C++ Runtime Environment https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist... (extracted folder: System64) to folder '\X-LibreOffice\Bin\LibreOffice 7\program'
3. I have replaced the new folder Fonts (from extracted installer) to '\X-LibreOffice\Lib\Fonts'.
4. I have updated JRE (Java Runtime Environment) to ver. 1.8.0 Build 361 then, after launch of X-LibreOffice, go to:
--> Tools --> Options --> Advanced, select 'Oracle Corporation 1.8.0_361' (confirm path of 'C:\PortableApps\X-LibreOffice\Lib\Java' --> Apply and press 'OK'
5. finally I have launch again the wrapper 'X-LibreOffice.exe'

b.t.w.
Visual C++ Runtime Environment (rel. 14.34.31931.0) greatly increases the startup speed of X-LibreOffice.

32-bit

It's a 32-bit build issue apparently. At least according to their bugtracker reports. But it doesn't affect all machines for some reason. So, we're sticking with skipping 7.5.0 to ensure all folks can access it. We'll be bundling the C++ runtimes as always as well.

Confirmed + Question

I've tried (last night after midnight) to install (a sandboxed) LO 32 bit on a Windows 7 SP1 x64 machine, and have encountered that same KB2999226 issue. Was planning to make more tests on an x86 machine today, but… busy, aboulia, car, etc.

My question is: Will the KB2999226 update be required when installing newer LO versions? Does the 7.5.1 RC work without it?

Required

It will be required. Installing it doesn't fix the 7.5.0 issue though.

Of Course!

What I wanted to express (I'm tired), is that an App Notes thingy should be added to let people known.

Planned

I'll be adding it to the app notes and I'm working on detecting it to alert users, too.
