r3dfox, modern Firefox based web browser for Windows 7

I'm K4sum1, the developer of r3dfox. I'm probably not going to make my own portable version as it's not something I would use. There is already an unofficial portable version, but it has done suspicious stuff in the past. I would prefer if there was something safer that I can endorse without needing to worry. That's what I'm asking for here. My fork is currently the only Firefox fork to support Windows 7 that I know of. Please make a portable version.

Neutral Opinion

RoastedFox has better portablelity than Chromium-based browsers, but there's a hitch. It has a single release for each supported language! Too much work for the (whole website's) maintainer!

  • Does your BloodyFox has an All-In-One Language Version?
  • Are there any (other) advantages if compared to other vulpini?

It'll get more chances if you're the maintainder of your own software.

Wordplay's Overplay

Roasted → FiredFox & (Bloody) RedFox. Vulpini.

  • Does R3dFox has an All-In-One Language Version? Or separate like Firefox?
  • Are there any (other) advantages if compared to other Firefox-based browsers?

PS. Sorry if annoying, but I like wordplaying.

I have put no research into

I have put no research into other languages because I don't know any other languages. I'm also not about to completely redo the language system as I want to remain as close to stock Firefox as I can.

I mostly just want this to be regular Firefox but works on Windows 7. With a few minor tweaks here and there.

Wordplay

As much fun as wordplay can be, it can be tough for folks where English isn't their first language. And we have a lot of folks like that here since the platform supports 83 languages.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Hoping for Windows XP support (if possible)

Hmm... it would've been nice if it supported Windows XP/Vista without resorting to OCAPI/external kernel thingies. That way, I could simply replace roytam1's New Moon/Serpent and feodor2's Mypal68 with an up-to-date Firefox fork that is Windows-XP/Vista-friendly. Then again, beggars can't be choosers so supporting Windows 7 is already a good start.

By the way, I've seen your thread here, and I'm guessing that you're here because you need help making r3dfox portable, right? Maybe John (or somebody else) could assist you with that.

Anyway, I wish you luck!

Maybe later

XP/Vista support is a lot more complex, but I want to try getting Vista sometime. XP might be a lot harder since Rust9x dpesn't work with mingw and it won't be officially looked into. I'll likely need to come up with my own solution for Rust. I think backporting modern Firefox to work with VS2017 (Last VS to compile for XP) would be a lot more work than modifying the Rust compiler to produce code that works with XP and building with mingw, which still supports XP as is. There's also a lot of stuff having been added since 52 (official) or 68 (unofficial) and no clear tracking on what does what or what I would need to replace to get it working.

I mostly posted here since it would be better to have it here to get more people using the browser. I'm working on my own portable mode similar to the method for Mypal68, which I believe would be better than these portable apps. However when people think portable, here is probably the first place.

It's fully understandable that it must be a very painful process reverting many "unfair" changes/decisions made by Mozilla, and it's still a miracle that feodor2 succeeded in making the 68th version of Firefox (A.K.A. Mypal68) support XP. But sure, all in due time... there's no need to rush. Like I said, supporting Windows 7 is already a good start.

Oh, OK.

Normally, this section is a good place to request applications to be made officially portable by PortableApps.com... but not all of them can be made officially portable. Supermium was the last application being made officially portable here.

Anyway, as an aside, I admire how many people at MSFN always find ways to make many, many applications support older Windows OSes... please don't stop.
