Audacity 3.6 Frequently Crashing

I'm fairly sure this is a problem with Audacity itself and not specifically the portable version, but I thought I'd mention it here anyway to see if others are having the same issue or if perhaps it's just me.

The problem is that, since updating to version 3.6, Audacity is frequently crashing. For me this occurs when I try to close a project or close the application itself. A crash report is generated and appears in a new window but the 'Send report' function doesn't work. The crash doesn't happen every time but has been happening so often as to make the program unusable. After each crash, all preference settings revert to default which is also quite annoying.

The problem is not completely new to v3.6 - I was getting occasional crashes with version 3.5.x also. In any case, I've gone back to v3.5.1 for the time being.

Is anyone else seeing this problem?

Made tests on:

  • Copied related folder somewhere else (same/other computer(s)).
  • Fresh installation, add your addons one by one.
  • (sandboxed) Audacity.exe the 32 & 64 bit versions.

Tests

Hi and thanks for commenting. Unfortunately I'm not sure I understand your post. Are these things you've done or are you suggesting I try them?
- By copy 'related folder', which folder are you referring to: the Audacity installation folder or the folder with the Audacity project in it? Or both? I will try this anyway when I get a chance.
- I tried a completely fresh installation of Audacity 3.6 but this didn't help.
- I will give the 32 bit version a try (I assume the PA menu shortcut was invoking the 64 bit version since my computer and OS (Windows 11) are 64 bit). I don't understand 'sandboxed' at all .

Hello & You're welcome!

Hello & You're welcome!

  • They're suggestions.
  • The 'AudacityPortable' folder.
  • Use a Sandbox. Or a Virtual Machine to run a different OS. Just like Sanboxie & VirtualBox.

The point, is to make different tests in all imaginable situations, for a better Traceability.
