I realise that VLC Portable already can play audio files, but I found DekiBulle, which is a audio only player. Might be kind of nice for people who primarily listen to music and don't want the video. It is open source (under GPL).

some of the features include:
- Using of the folders arborescence (for a fast and easy acces to you songs).
Multilingual (English, French, Spanish, Esperanto, Italiano, Swedish, German, Czech, Dutch).

- Multiformat (MP3, WAV, OGG, WMA, MPC, M3U, PLS, AIFF, MP2, MP1, CDA)
(+ FLAC, MID, WV, SPX, AC3, AAC, M4A, TTA, APE, MAC, OFR, OFS in option).
- Internet stream (URL in m3u or pls file).
- MOD files (IT, XM, S3M, MOD, MTM, UMX).
- Meta Tag readed (MP3, OGG, WMA, MPC, MP2, APE).
- Meta Tag editor (MP3, OGG, MPC, MP2, APE, mass edition).
- CDDB supported (search for Audio CD titles on internet).
- Hotkeys (Play/Pause, Previous/Next song, Volume +/-, etc...).
- Possibility to set the volume by the Windows master (can be usefull to modify volume in games for example), or only for DéKiBulle.
- Equalizer (5 bands).
- Baloon-hint popup window (showed at each song change).
- Shuffle playing, Loop playing.
- Command lines supported ("dekibulle.exe /play /prev /next /quit /open /skin:xxx /show")
- Search for songs in folders (search in filename and/or in meta tags infos)
- Search for songs in playlist
- Automaticaly checks for updates.
- Fully portable (options are stored in the DéKiBulle folder and pathes are stored in relative format).
- Skinnable, with Skin editor included.
- Editable song names display.
- Possibility to display the album picture.
- Selection of the output device.
- Selection of a proxy for internet access.
- AudioScrobbler function for the site
- Compatible with the function MSN "Current play".

I agree.

Hey guys, thought I'd still commend this awesome music player! I just love the hotkey control for basically everything...and actually, it's really handy for changing the volume of the whole computer! You can use the hotkeys for that of course. Quick update on the link in case that one doesn't work...but I think it's the same...

Looks cool, i'll test it

Looks cool, i'll test it out, and if i like it, i'll PAF it up for you.

Edit: Sorry, can't be done, it uses the closed source BASS audio library. It's the same reason MusikCube couldn't be made portable.

Edit 2: I tested it out with RegShot, no reg keys are created and all settings are contained in the app dir. It is portable as is. Unfortunately, for the reason mentioned above, it currently cannot be PAFed because all apps that become official will be hosted on SourceForge and SF does not allow closed source components.

Edit 3: I made it anyway and just included a note in the topic, its over here.
