I'm confused.
I can't work out how to control the following, if indeed it can be controlled.
When clicking on a link in a web page, the new page appears either (i) in a new tab or (ii) in the existing tab, replacing the current page, which is then recoverable using BackArrow. Tools -> Options -> Tabs -> bullet "new tab", which is my setting, does not seem to guarantee (i).
I have no idea which of (i) and (ii) is going to happen in any given instance.
Is there a way of always getting behaviour (i)? (Or for that matter always getting behaviour (ii)?)
Thank you.
Fergus
setting it to "always new tab" should guarantee (i).
I never had issues with it except for some links being programmed to open a new window. But there is nothing to do about that, i think.

Thank you. Your account of how things work is how I would expect them to work.
However:
The only way I can consistently get new links/ bookmarks etc to open in a new tab is if (i) Tools -> Options -> Tabs: "always new tab" is ticked; and (ii) Tools -> Options -> Tabs: "switch to it immediately" is ticked; and (iii) if I Ctrl-Left-Click instead of just Left-Click when pressing the link/ bookmark. How crazy is that?
What's wrong: my Windows setup? my Firefox setup? this version (2.0.0.6) of Firefox?

If it is a general Firefox issue that is the place to ask.

Some sites specify to open a page in a new window and Firefox instead opens it in a new tab. I don't think there is any way around it.

The best way to "overcome" this is to use your center mouse wheel button to open links...which automagically open in a new tab every time. That's what I do.
As said above...if the webpage has the code "target='_blank'" in the anchor for the link, it'll open in a new tab automatically even if you left click the link like normal.

I use it all the time. Also, if you middle-click on an already opened tab, it closes it.
