I/O Magic DataToGo

I am about ready to purchase an I/O Magic 80GB - External 2.5” Hard Drive - Portable Storage Device.

Rationale: Price. $69 at Office Max right now. Size. It is only 4.875in x 2.875in x 0.5in. GB's. I need more storage space portably. Speed 5400rpm.

Two things for those who would care to guide me:

  • I plan to use TruCrypt or Toucan to encrypt part of the drive. Not discussion needed on admin rights, every PC i use will have it, plus I will still have my Flash drive in a pinch. Can I use an ini to launch TruCrypt or Toucan like I use for PAM(PAP)?
  • Anybody have or use this drive right now?

(I saw your comment.) Do you

(I saw your comment.)
Do you mean using the autorun.inf (to launch Truecrypt/Toucan)? Or what?

Truecrypt

I ended up using TrueCrypt and used the Traveler Mode to construct and autorun.inf.

So far so good.

Made a 15Gb secure partition and copied it over to the drive.

PortableApps seem to launch faster so far.

UPDATE: Review

I love it!!!

Pros:

  • SPEED! I will post read/write tests later, but it seems to be 3 to 4x faster than my SanDisk 2Gb Micro Cruzer all around from launching programs to just plain normal use..
  • Physical Size. Measures 4.875in x 2.875in x 0.5in. My wallet is actually bigger. I wouldn't want to it on this though.
  • Memory Size. 120Gb! Nuff said.
  • Price. $89.
  • Ease. Created 15Gb TrueCrypt Partion. True Crypt launches off an ini and allows me to mount the drive easily. This also helps with consistent drive letters because I get to chose the letter with TrueCrypt. uTorrent, for example, does not like it when you change drive letters for files.
  • Heat. None. I have really abused this drive with read/writes and so far it has not even remotely heated up, unlike my flash drives.

Cons:

  • Cable Size. A 3ft? usb Y-Cable is provided. I can fit the drive in my pocket in a pinch, but the cable is a bit cumbersome. A retractable cable would add size though.
  • Y-Cable. I guess it is for using on a laptop or usb hub which does not provide enough power. I have not had to use the other plug so the extra connector seems to just get in the way.

To make this just the perfect drive I only need to accomplish one more thing. Get the TrueCrypt partition to read the ini when it is mounted. I don't think this is possible. I can get it to open up the drive, but it will not read the ini which renames the drive, provides an icon and launches StartPortableApps.exe. Not really a big worry though.
