I have found a media player that works from a portable drvie so far without modification. It is the VLC media player. I see right now though for someone to just unzip it to a portable drive it weighs in at 34.4 MB. But, it is just one of the many possibilities out there. There is also mplayer, which should work, but from the latest build, I don't see a gui present. But then again these are just some suggestions for possible media players.
Edit: This might not belong in the development section, but maybe in the General Discussion or Request apps areas.
Well, that was quite an experience. PortableApps.com ended up on the homepage of both Slashdot and Digg at the same time. Needless to say, this shared-hosting-based Drupal site wasn't quite ready for all of that. I was able to get placeholders up within an hour or two and keep the pages disabled. The Support section was brought back online first. Then the Apps Directory. I've re-enabled the forums for now and am watching the server load. I may have to disable them again until we at least drop off the Slashdot homepage (4th from the bottom now).
None of the download links appear to be working for me. I had to go to sourceforge and do a search in order to find them. Hopefully you can fix this.
John-
Do you have any games in mind for the Games section? I was wondering because not many people have posted requesting games. If you don't I'm sure I could dig up a few....

You can find several very good apps there. You can also find Spread32, so far the only stand-alone spreadsheet I can find that is already portable.
Does anybody know of an open source video/DVD player that is already portable or could easily be made portable with a launcher?
I thought that you could put PortableGnumeric (when released) in the light version of the suite to give more functionality, yet still be lightweight.
Just to keep everyone in the loop. I'm putting the final touches on both of these and will be releasing them on Tuesday. At least one other new app will be released as well. The Portable OpenOffice.org update is a big one as it adds compatibility and portability with all settings to all Windows versions (except Win95, which OO.o no longer supports).
A few other announcements will be coming this week as well including a full set of RSS feeds to watch everything on the site from app announcements to news to forum posts as well as the start of the development section.
