Create your own portable (u3p) cad (dwg/fxp) viewer

Submitted by alkoid on November 26, 2008 - 5:26pm

Hello all,

After a very annoying day of searching for a portable CAD viewer I decided to create my own. The following are simple instructions on how to create the u3p file yourself since I have no site to host it on.

First download the LiteCAD zipfile from www.litecad.com.
Unzip the file into a directory and move the lcfont executable to the end of the directory

we are going to use packagefactory to create the u3p file and it will just grab the first executable in the directory for the u3p file

Download packagefactory from www.softpedia.com

Install it and run it.

Extract U3 apps to use on usb drive

Submitted by lpoteetguy on November 26, 2008 - 12:58pm

I wanted to use a couple of the U3 porable progams on my non U3 Smartdrive USB. I figured out a way to to it.

1. Download a U3 app from the SanDisk website.
2. Right click on the app an open it with WinRar.
3. WinRar will give you an error. Ignore it and you should still be able to view the files inside the U3 exe.
4. Now click on "Convert to SFX". You can use the default options and click on.
5. It will convert the U3 exe and the icon may change to a WinRar exe file.
6. Now right click the exe and extract the files.

IRC trouble

As some of yyou may know we had a spammer come onto our channel last night on IRC and started well… spamming it. We quickly found out that this spammer also had an anonymizer so we could not ban him or even track which person it was when they entered into the channel. After 2-4 hours of work we finally got a solution that worked and were managed to bring the channel under control. Right now I want to point out some people that helped out a lot and that we should thank for of the help they gave.

Why we didn't have Portable Apps for Linux

Submitted by dkulchenko on November 25, 2008 - 8:30pm

I know the "Portable Apps for Linux" heat has kind of died down, but I'd like to say a few words why this isn't moving along.

On Windows, when you install a program, you get a folder with the program files, and possibly a few registry entries and configuration files (usually in the same folder as the program). Therefore, it is not too difficult to take the program (or make a launcher :), modify it so that it does not save registry entries, and publish that. All the necessary dependencies and outside functions are stored in the dll files found scattered all over a Windows install.

Password protection only(no encryption) for USB key so it can be used after on any PC whitout ADM priviledge

Submitted by tremblant on November 24, 2008 - 6:15pm

I hope I am asking the right way, as I am not used to Forums...
I am looking for a password protection I can install on my USB key that will ask for a password before opening, without encryption, so that I can use it on any PC (so without ADM priviledge)during travelling, free or not..
I looked very hard on the net but most come with encryption and always with the necessity of using it on a PC with adm priviledge..
Can you help me

Many thanks

Non-portable apps loaded on host computer

Submitted by wzigrang on November 24, 2008 - 7:13am

I'm using Portable Firefox & Portable Thunderbird which I have updated online before I read the FAQ which said this was no longer advisable. Now, when I shut down, I find instances of (non-portable) FF & TB on the host computer, which need to be stopped before I can unplug. ?Is this normal behavior?? ?Is it related to my updates?? ?Should I install the newer Portable versions over the updated ones??

Thanx for the help,
Bill Zigrang
