How do you make an app portable?

Submitted by teqnilogik on November 26, 2006 - 10:17am

I am wondering what modifications are made to applications in order to make them portable. I know that for a lot of apps all that is required is to just copy their program files over to a flash drive and they'll run as long as they don't rely too much on the registry. I am just curious how apps on PortableApps.com are modified to make them portable. What changes are made to the programming code, etc?

I would like to see an option in the forums to "Mark All Forums Read" And "Mark All Posts Read" for each forum.
This would make finding new posts a lot easier with out having to go through and read every post to clear the "new" flag.

Hi,
I just started using portable apps. So far it's just FireFox & Thunderbird. I was wondering if there is, or will be an extension to synchronize your portable apps with your desktop versions of those apps? Specifically mail & addresses in Thunderbird; and bookmarks in Firefox?
Also, is there also an extension for Thunderbird Portable that will find ( and remove )duplicate mail & addresses, and and extension that will find duplicate bookmarks in Firefox portable?
Thanks in advance.

Virus protection?

Submitted by duke4e on November 24, 2006 - 7:35am

Hey to everyone, this is my first post here.

First of all, thanks to whole open source community for making great apps, and thanks to everyone here who made the same apps portable.

Second, how about making some kind of protection for portable apps?
Althrought you can have clamwin on your USB drive, it's dumb to scan every PC in wich you plug your USB drive. How about some kind of locking of portable apps on your USB, so infected computers can't infect your portable apps when you run them.
