Filehippo.com - Hosting Applications There?

Submitted by Augi on July 17, 2009 - 12:02pm

Would it be allowed for PA.c applications to be hosted on Filehippo.com (FH.c)?

I imagine positive exposure and a strengthening of credibility of PA.c. FH.c would introduce PA.c apps to a wider public (than the current Sourceforge community or other tech communities/junkies). FH.c has a reputation for hosting only malware-free applications. Were FH.c to host PA.c apps, I believe that would only strengthen PA.c's reputation and credibility in the digital world.

Using FileZilla Portable.. Can hackers/virus retrieve the login/passwords filezilla.xml or any file on the USB Drive?

Submitted by gariben on July 17, 2009 - 4:34am

My sites were hacked using via Gumblar hack/virus. I was using FileZilla and somehow they used the FTP login/passwords to hack into my sites.

I have now removed the Filezilla.XML file on the host machine and running data sensitive stuff using the Portable Apps via USB Drive.

If I visit a hacked site again(with virus).. and somehow my PC gets infected... Is the data on USB drive safe?

Thanks,
Mike

Do not save any files on the host computer

Submitted by hendahkg on July 17, 2009 - 1:02am

The word "Portable" means not only being able to run without installation, it also means if the user runs it on a portable drive (e.g. USB thumb), all temp files should be saved on the portable drive instead of on the host computer. This means you should always save temp files, temp folders on the same drive as the application, and leave no trace on the host computer.

Indication for live installers in PortableApps.com Format (aka installers that download things)

I'm working on an indicator of live installers for those who don't like such things and was thinking of having them end in live.paf.exe instead of just paf.exe. Do people think this is sufficient to let people know? Do most people care?

Please post your thoughts on it so we can nail this down for the 1.0 release.

Install PortablesApps on (internal) D drive

Submitted by SandLake on July 14, 2009 - 6:34am

Is it possible to install the PortableApps platform onto a regular internal hard disk, I like the way it ring fences it's applications from the host PC and I would like to run it on my netbook without it leaving a trail on the actual netbook and I'm guessing it would run faster than from a memory stick?

Thanks

Not exactly PortableApps.com standard, but it will do...

Submitted by SMB Fanatic on July 13, 2009 - 11:32pm

I'm trying to make my own collection of programs whose folder structure is compatible with the PortableApps.com Platform folder architecture.

FOR EXAMPLE:
For Firefox 3 Portable,

[DRIVE LETTER]:\
|

|___PortableApps\
|

|___FirefoxPortable\

The PortableApps Menu lists any EXE files located in the sub-folders directly within the PortableApps folder.

I've used programs from a USB drive that were not meant to be portable,
