A clever fellow has written a great BartPE howto article that has been published in the Spring 2010, Vol 27, #1 issue of the 2600 Hackers Quaterly magazine. You can download the issue for free as a PDF from this website:

This BartPE howto article has pumped up my juices and now I have a strong desire to setup a portable version of Windows XP Pro that I can bootup on any PC from a USB stick and/or a CD. I want to run FireFox, Irfranview, Gimp and OpenOffice.

Wondered how many people had to make programs portable because of compatability issues?

Earlier this month, I took the plunge and upgraded my office desktop to a laptop -- had been putting it off as I knew the time involved in setting up a new computer, reloading programs, and etc...

Anyways, I went laptop this time around for the office instead of replacing with another desktop.

I was hestitant to go with 64bit version but could not find a 32bit version I was interested in.

Does a portable app currently exist for faxing files (such as a .odt from OO Writer) through an internal or external dial-up modem? Performed a search and didn't come up with anything obvious.

Is there some way to get all my portable apps to always restore settings after a crash, without having to confirm it in the dialogs? I crash alot

i am working on an application in C#.net windows environment. can i make the portable version of my application. If yes, then tell me the procedure for the same.

I've used the application named FolderMatch and like it but it is not a portable app and it cost $30 per copy...

I would like to find a Portable App that does the same thing.

I use it after massive copies... to check to see if everything copied OK.

Or to find which files are different in deep directory structures.

Anybody know of anything that will do this in a Portable App?

I need to know if there's an open source OR freeware SD-card formatter for Windows? I care to know because I need a formatter for an automated installer. I looked into the Panasonic SD Formatter, which is a fantastic piece of work, but it's not for redistribution, obviously. All and any assitance is appreciated.

I am just curious given the high pay that the developers of apps receive why is it that they spend their free time and efforts to develop applications for PortableApps?

Since I started the thread I guess I should answer first?

Okay... I don't even know where this post goes but i'm going to put in the general discusion hoping that it's the right place. Okay, so everybody knows that you can only open one program with autorun.inf. I found out the hard way wasting 5 hours of my precious life trying to do so. There is no way (That i know of) to open more than one in an .inf. However, recently I've come across .bat files. I noticed that you could automate a computer to do a lot of thigns in very little time, and it got me thinking. I created a .bat file that looked something like this:

Guys, what's going on? Is upcoming Suite 2.0 eating up all your resources? Why are no more updates coming up? Skype, Google Chrome... Please update the software! Thanks!
