Beta Testing

I've just posted a pre-release of OpenOffice.org Portable 2.0.3 and need some folks to test it out... especially if you use Windows 2000 and had the old issue of it not being able to open or save files before I included a default set of settings. For the unfamiliar, OpenOffice.org is a complete office suite (word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, etc). This new release is the result of quite a bit of research and experimentation, allowing me to add some of the new features:

Live CD Support - OpenOffice.org Portable now supports runnings from a CD. Just install it to a local drive and run it once, making any settings changes you like within OpenOffice.org. Then exit out and copy the OpenOfficePortable.ini file from OpenOfficePortable\Other\OpenOfficePortableSource to the OpenOfficePortable directory. Edit it and change the RunDataLocally parameter to true. Then, run it again from your local drive so that the launcher can pre-configure OpenOffice.org to run from a read-only media. Finally, you can burn the OpenOfficePortable directory to a read-only drive. The OpenOffice.org files will run directly from the read-only media. The settings files will be copied to the local machine within the My Documents directory (specifically to a directory called OpenOfficePortableTemp within there). When complete, this directory will be deleted.

This should fix all of the memory errors. There maybe a couple of issues with the reading back of values from the INI files into your program, testing would be appreciated.

It DOES have a number of issues. I would like to ask you all if when you use the application you run Regmon n the background and then post up the details of the last attempted write of that program, e.g. the attempt that failed. This should help me to pin down a munber of bug. Note file names with spaces are not supported at the moment.

For the unfamiliar, Gaim is a multi-network instant messaging client that works with AOL, MSN, Yahoo, etc. This release has many of the features of the other new apps, plus some new stuff:

In-Place Upgrades - Gaim Portable supports the ability to do what I'm calling an "in-place upgrade". This means that you can extract it right over an existing installation of Gaim Portable without losing any of your existing preferences and it'll Just Work (tm).

It has built-in effects, an easy to use interface and support for a wide array of plugins. This release has many of the features of the other new apps, plus some new stuff:

I've been planning on portablizing a small, fun game for inclusion in the Portable Apps Suite for a while now. And it hit me while playing Brain Age's Sudoku puzzles on my Nintendo DS the other day... why not Sudoku? Well, after searching through all the open source implementations, one seemed pretty solid. So, we now have Sudoku Portable. It's under 400k installed. Very fast. Has 4 modes of difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard and Impossible). Allows you to enter possible solutions by holding the shift key down (only the regular numbers, not the numeric keypad). And it automatically saves your game between sessions. It's also got all the other features of the new apps including in-place upgrade support, Live CD compatibility (no changes needed after running it once), works on Windows 95 and up, and is even mostly compatible with Wine (it just won't save your game or settings when you exit).

I've just released a new FileZilla Portable Launcher that corrects some issues with the current release:

Unicode Command Line - The GetParameters function has been updated to handle unicode paths passed to FileZillaPortable.exe on the command line.

INI File Path - The INI file path ends up with a double-slash after the INIPATH variable when constructed (\\) which may cause issues on some unpatched Win95/98 systems.

FileZilla.exe Not Found - This error occurs if you place the FileZillaPortable.exe launcher one directory above FileZillaPortable.
