Will PortableApps run on a dumb terminal? [Platforms?]

Submitted by itzthor on January 27, 2010 - 9:20am

The office my wife works at uses dumb terminals. At least that's what she says. I know that a majority of the info on the individual pc's comes from the server but I'm not sure if there is anything actually installed on the client machines.

With that in mind, will Portable Apps run on a Windows based dumb terminal? Or will there have to be an OS installed on the pc itself?

*EDIT* Portable Apps would be running off of a thumb drive.

Newbi with question

Submitted by grumpyguard on January 26, 2010 - 1:52pm

I want to make an EA game portable. The game in question is Battlefield 2. I purchased the game and down loaded the most current two patches. One patch allows the game to be played with out the CD. How would I install the game and then the patches? I have made one successful portable app., but that was straight forward as I only needed to install the game.

I would like to be able to use this game at work. I work nights and have down time.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Two instances of PortableApps on one machine

Submitted by avmad on January 26, 2010 - 8:37am

Hi all,

I am hosting a vmware Win XP virtual machine on my Win XP laptop. The VM is mounting the host "My Documents" folder.

In the host My Documents folder I have a "My PortableApps" folder which is the normal root of the PortableApps folders.

I want to use the PortableApps menu system and some of the apps contained within it from my VM. However, if I try to run say FireFox Portable in my VM while it is already running in my host machine then I get an error (which is understandable).

Execute PortableApps on a read only partition?

Submitted by Hemin on January 24, 2010 - 3:00pm

Finally I managed to change my USB sticks to have a partition that is seen as a CDROM drive on Windows. With the tools from the chipset manufacturer i can copy any ISO to the emulate partition of the USB. I wonder if there is any way to configure the PortableApps like the U3 software. That is, put the core software in the partition of the CD, and install other applications on the normal partition.

Where are things saved? [New to portable apps]

Submitted by adisaunders on January 24, 2010 - 10:30am

Hi, new member and loving being able to take my favorite apps with me on my pen drive.

Just one question with regards browser apps. If I am using my company PC but on my home network does anything get saved to the laptop or does it all get saved on to the pen drive? Sport websites are blocked at work but I can get on to them at home. If I use firefox portable or any other browser, will there be any history of me being on the sport websites left on my laptop?

Cheers

Perfect Drive icon for those using PortableApps.com Software

Submitted by RJ12 on January 23, 2010 - 4:32pm

While I was browsing DeviantArt I noticed this set of Portable Drive icons, guess what one of them are. Its a HDD with the portable apps logo (Did he ask permission for that?) its really cool. Just wanted to share with everyone, wouldnt it be cool if we could make one like that one.

The link is at http://denmark1977.deviantart.com/art/Portable-HDD-Dock-Icons-145905761

You can set that as your drive icon in the AutoRun file.

Times displayed on the web site

Submitted by xerces8 on January 23, 2010 - 6:48am

Hi!

Times displayed on the web site are formatted (apparently) in US locale and the values are in some timezone, that is one of US timezones, I guess.
As the site is visited from all over the world, at least the information about the used timezones should be available somewhere.
Maybe like this: November 1, 2008 - 6:37pm PST

Or use a one line Javascript that displays times in the viewers timezone (and format).
