Making "PortableApps" isolated and invulnerable to viruses

Submitted by Harry CJ on October 25, 2010 - 11:32am

Hello. Sorry if this question has been asked before, or if this is the wrong forum to post it in...

I want to:

1. Partition my USB thumb drive (Kingston DT 2.0, 4GB) so that i can install PortableApps on one of the partitions.

2. Make the PortableApps partition "read-only", so that viruses do not attack that partition.
(You know those filthy viruses that create autorun.inf files in the usb drives, so i don't want that stuff !)

Portable apps launcher programs grouping?

Submitted by 0verfl0w on October 25, 2010 - 2:04am

============
Is it possible/planned to make application grouping? at least separators Smile
Folders as it made in xp/w7 + separators could be the perfect thing for people who have a lots of portable applications.
============
Also i would like to suggest more configurable right menu, or even ability to hide it. I store my music and photos and other files encrypted and those folders are useless for me, but it could be nice if i can add some custom folders or even add explorer shourtcuts like my computer/control panel/cmd/etc.

Portable Download

Submitted by Toby_213 on October 23, 2010 - 12:19pm

Hello and sorry if the subject is somewhat confusing.
I am at a loss in the following matter:
I teach at college and all of our classrooms are fitted with a video projector and a computer, equipment I use for teaching. Since almost anybody is granted access to the computer it is highly likely that they are not free of viruses and malware.
As of now (since the 10+ infection) I used a usb stick to transfer data for the computer in my office to the one in the classroom.

Whatever happened to MuiltMedia PAL?

Whatever happened to MuiltMedia PAL?

That was a good collection, and saved me the trouble of setting up my own.
I could not find it in a search here. Perhaps under another name?

A collection of Audio/Video players creators.

VLC Player
Cool Player
Infra Recorder
Audacity

and many others....

I had this downloaded on my old computer.
IS there a link to it that still works?

Previous version of Skype

Submitted by LucyFan on October 22, 2010 - 10:11am

Hi

I was wondering if anybody had a link to an older portable version of skype.

In 5 they seem to have changed the way contacts are added and it appears to open an internet browser type window, however this is blocked by my works firewall so I would like to revert back to an earlier version.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Official "Thank You" thread

Submitted by getco on October 20, 2010 - 11:03am

Hey there!

I just love it when there are so many new PA updates and new apps available and thought that I'd drop by and say a big "Thank you!"...

But then I thought what if others want to do the same (and I know there are many people here who want to)? What if everyone started their own Thank You thread... So why don't we all express our gratitude towards the whole PA team and vision here in this thread Smile

create web installer?

Submitted by ieperlingetje on October 19, 2010 - 11:00am

For new users it would be cool if they could select portable apps on a web page and when they made their choice, they could download a custom a zip file with the selected apps bundled in it. Since the portable apps installers simply copy the contents to the flash drive, this can easily be done on the server side. For those that don't understand this idea very clear: Mowes has something similar (see http://www.chsoftware.net/en/mowes/mowesmixer/mowesmixer.htm?step=2).

Prapper? What the .....?

Submitted by Chim on October 18, 2010 - 4:22pm

So, I Googled for Format Factory Portable.
I found this Hit:

https://portableapps.com/node/18743

Is this legit?
I clicked on the link in there to supposedly download Format Factory Portable.
Something seemed odd about some of the text at the top.
I noticed it said, "Your prapper download will start shortly."
I couldn't remember exactly what it was supposed to say, but it seemed unfamiliar.
I later verified with another App that it's supposed to say, "Your PortableApps.com: Portable Software / USB download will start shortly."
