Server Change, Any Issues?

Our PortableApps.com Drupal install has now been moved to a new server setup. This is why the site was set to maintenance mode for a few minutes a little over an hour ago and why it's been read-only for the past hour and a half. Everything should be up and running again, though search results will take a while to repopulate. I wanted to see if anyone is having any other issues now that it has been moved.

how secure

Submitted by mrmedia on June 12, 2014 - 9:35am

Seems to be a virtual OS, based on win32, might have origins in OS2 or 4-5 other winclones types.

How secure is it?

Is it running with 65000 open ports ?
Is it like wine - not a full OS but an emulator?
Perhaps it is only running when an app is running?
Is it an OS that a hacker can get into?
Is it an OS that a hacker can requst information on its type so as to identify it and know what to do?

Chrome won't auto update

Submitted by mrbarefoot325 on June 8, 2014 - 5:12pm

PortableApps Chrome won't update, directly through the browser: I get "Update failed (error: 1)". And the via the PortableApps platform won't find the outdated Chrome and prompt for the update.

Suggestions?

The only thing that has worked is downloading the .paf.exe file and manually updating each Chrome in place. I don't have this issue with any other portable apps...

locking down portable version of Chromium from extensions

Submitted by xbibleyosef on June 6, 2014 - 12:06pm

I have a portable version of Chromium on my USB drive, I'm specifically using the XChromium version.

This is working absolutely great, there is a black branded theme and a proxy application included.

Often if I try this USB drive on some of my test PCs then Avast (or probably any other AV client) will try to install a browser extension.

I'd like to to prevent it from installing any other extensions. This product will be used by folks with limited IT knowledge (and English) and I want to minimise complexity.

Finding PortableApps Other than Free and Opensource?

Submitted by Plettschner on June 4, 2014 - 9:47pm

Where would one find listings or a directory of PortableApps that are available, other than the free and open source apps listed here?

I noticed the other day that Ultra Edit has a version available for the PortableApps platform... I would imagine there are other products out there too, but can't seem to find a list of them.... if there is such a thing.

Anyone?

ReactOS Open Source Support Program

ReactOS has recently started the "ReactOS Open Source Support Program".
Tell the Developer(s) of your favourite Open Source Software. Software in this program will be provided "extra attention" to ensure that they are working (and continue to work) on ReactOS. Also they will be listed in ReactOS Community Edition's "Setup App Manager", which will "allow software to be pre-staged in an installation image", and Note: "The service is free to all software under a free or open source license and is intended to help provide wider audiences to such programs."

want to tell UAC to not appear when using certain portable app

Submitted by xbibleyosef on May 31, 2014 - 1:24pm

how can I do this?

I need to distribute a USB drive with Truecrypt (yes I know its not supported now, I don't care. It works perfect for what I need. No politics in this thread please)

I want to make sure Windows does not keep asking me for UAC every time Truecrypt mounts/dismounts.

This needs to be a portable app that runs with a script quietly in the background.

any idea please?
