Off Topic Forum

Submitted by ASJ on September 3, 2012 - 10:48pm

Could someone please clean up the newest entry to the Off Topic Forum. It has been there for hours. I find it to be very offensive. Isn't there some kind of filter that PortableApps.com could be using to prevent this from happening again. Seeing this kind of offensive material makes PA look bad.

Best Flash Drive for portable apps?

Submitted by ZRand on August 31, 2012 - 5:49am

The new Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 seems to be the best for 4K writes:
search for ( best flash drive whoratesit )

But its not without issue (intermittent freezes)
search for ( sandisk random 4k comments whoratesit )

I am looking for better alternatives.

Thanks.

Dealing with Anti-Virus and Malware detectors

Submitted by carlindo on August 30, 2012 - 3:37pm

Many anti-Virus and mal-ware detectors just assume that portable applications, i.e. applications running directly from portable mass memory devices (for example a pen drive) are security threats and they simply block the portable application execution.

A trivial, yet inelegant solution, is simply to disable the Anti-virus or Mal-ware programs. Besides inelegant, this solution leaves the host system unprotected and most of the time, to disable the protection features is required admin privileges which the visitor, trying to run the portable application, normally does not have.

Xampp & PHP

Submitted by Evans187 on August 29, 2012 - 10:28am

Hi guys.

Sorry for what might seem like a simple question...but:

I have installed XAMPP, and XAMPP control panel.

They appear to work fine, I unzipped it to the root of my flash drive like i read to do, opened up the control panel, started Apache, Mysql - went into phpmyadmin, made a DB and some tables inside it.

I also have notepad++ installed from before, I created a simple page with just initializing a variable and then echo'ing it - however when previewed in Firefox it does not show the PHP elements.

Am I missing some obvious step here?

Can't 'pin' PortableApps to status bar - Multiple Instances

Submitted by benway6 on August 23, 2012 - 8:24am

Thought I'd pin PortableAppsPlatform.exe to the status bar so I wouldn't have to open the USB drive each time and run it. What happens, though, is a new instance is started each time you click it.

I've seen programs have the option "allow only one instance", but didn't see this in PortableApps anywhere...

For instance, running Objectdock, that hides the status bar, you have no access to PortableApps, so pinning it would allow you to bring it up as needed.

mollum verification

While I appreciate having mollum activated, and hope it cuts back on the spam, I wonder If there's a way to disable the verification for users that have had a specified number of posts successfully submitted?

I haven't looked at the module recently, might be able to figure it out myself before John replies, if so, I'll post the answer to my question here.
