Enable anonymous browsing in Portable Firefox

Submitted by webfork on July 18, 2007 - 8:25pm

Want to use your current browser settings and configuration but use them anonymously and free?

Why enable anonymous browsing? See: http://tor.eff.org/overview.html.en

Time: Following the basic instructions for PortableTor, Firefox, and TorButton should only take 5 minutes. Configuring for multiple proxies may take about 15 minutes.

Caveat:

  • Anonymous browsing will usually be slower than normal browsing (sometimes very slow).

Into one .exe

Submitted by Jacob Mastel on July 18, 2007 - 6:04pm

I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed. No, I did not search I would even know what keywords to use. Is there a program that would condense a couple of files like an .exe, .ini, and maybe a few more into a single .exe?

Lexar fastest, readyboost falls short

Submitted by JRVJRV on July 18, 2007 - 2:13pm

The July issue of PCWorld has a test of three different flash drives. The main purpose of the test is to see how much they can improve the performance of Vista by using readyboost. They find that readyboost doesn't make much difference.

They also tested the three drives for file transfer speed to read and write a large file. They tested a Lexar, Kingston and Ritek flash drives and found the Lexar to be by far the fastest.

A question about stickies

Submitted by Jacob Mastel on July 18, 2007 - 12:48pm

No I am not requesting this and I did search. For those of you that don't know what stickies is read about it at http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk. I use stickies on a daily basis off of my flash drive. However I have noticed a through a couple of programs, like P.A.M. and Pstart, stickies does not (for lack of a better way of saying) read into it's directory. If I launch it manually it works great. Finds the .ini file and continues to read and write from its directory. But when I use P.A.M and other to run it, it doesn't pick up those files. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

New Forum

Submitted by Jacob Mastel on July 18, 2007 - 12:17pm

Okay John, First of all we all love theses forums and all of your dedicated work to this sight. I have noticed lately that there are many, many different take-offs of your menu, and huge amounts of themes. The only problem is that they are scattered over the Off Topic, General Discussion, and Beta Testing Forums. I don't mean to sound winy, but it would be nice if there was a forum specifically for theses things. It would definitely reduce the number of people asking specifically for menus that do this and/or that.

Enabling secure chat in Portable GAIM

Submitted by webfork on July 18, 2007 - 3:39am

Security feature: you can enable "Off The Record" encryption used by Adium and many other chat tools. The whole process takes less than 10 mins.

1. Go to the OTR Website www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/

2. Scroll down the page and download "installer for the plugin for gaim 2 beta 5."

3. Use Universal Extractor (http://portablefreeware.com/?id=641) to open the downloaded executable without going through the install process.

4. From the extracted folder, delete "[NSIS].nsi" and "$PLUGINSDIR" and move all other files to your GAIM install directory under \App\Gaim\plugins.
