Best programs to have?

Submitted by Jorlwind on May 24, 2006 - 3:49pm

Suddenly I feel really newbish and dumb for asking..
But I'm new to using portable apps(which is strange because i'm usually traveling around with my dad) and i was wondering what are the best programs to have for your USB? I already downloaded Openoffice and Gaim and firefox, but I was wondering if there was other things you think would be really useful to have in the future?

I did search the Site like the guidelines said and the only thing that came close was the topic 'whats on your USB?' but you guys cite alot of programs that aren't on this site and sorta don't post many links.. (I don't mean that as an insult!!)

I'm back!

Submitted by Bruce Pascoe on May 24, 2006 - 1:09pm

Hey, it's me, Bruce. I'm back after being MIA from the forums for quite a while. What have I missed while I've been working on my game?

Oh, and I seriously wish there were a way to mark all these old posts as read without having to actually read them. The "100 new posts" thing is annoying, and it won't go away unless I at least load said posts.

Life of Flash Drive

Submitted by markg on May 24, 2006 - 8:05am

Hi
I use a Sandisk Cruzer Titanium 2GB and one of the main application I have is Firefox Portable. I noticed that by default the Portable version has "History" and "Cache" set at 0 to reduce the number of writes to the flash drive and hence boost its life. However on one of the machines I use this seems to make Firefox noticeably more sluggish.
I also read today about a new Samsung laptop that uses 32GB of NAND Flash instead of a hard drive. They claim the life of the flash will be about the same as a hard drive. There was also a comment in the article that modern flash memory has a much better number of read/writes before failure. So to improve performance I've allowed my Portable Firefox to have a 7 day history and 20MB of cache.

PA.com FF Search Plugin Permission

Submitted by Ashes for Tears on May 24, 2006 - 1:22am

OK, here goes. I'm trying to make a Portable Apps Search Plugin for Firefox (this could be an excercise in futility, but I seem to do that for a living anyway :D), it seems I need a little more info:

1. John, do I need permission for this? (copyright/tradmark issue probs etc.)

and 2. Does Drupal use a different search syntax or something? I can't seem to figure it out. I'm looking for something like this: input name="qt" user="", where 'qt' would be the search sytax. Anybody have any advice?

Thanks All

Ashes

Just curious, when is Portable 7-Zip coming out? I read somewhere here that it is being worked on.

PStart server down

Submitted by pillshovel on May 22, 2006 - 5:21pm

I have been trying for a couple of days to download PStart, but their server has been down. Is this just a glitch or is it no longer available. Does anyone know of an alternative download site?

Thanks,

Chad

Submitted by MatYadabyte on May 22, 2006 - 9:55am

Hi Portable Appsters

We have just released a new free Portable App called Yadabyte Dictionary. Its ideal for when you need a fast and comprehensive dictionary but dont have access to a web based service.

Features:

  • Comprehensive: More definitions and synonyms than any other available dictionary. These all stem from an awesome 145,000 + definitions.
  • Super Useful: Dictionary definitions, thesaurus and usage all in one application.
  • Incredibly small file size: thanks to our bespoke text compression techniques. With Yadabyte Dictionary we have compressed nearly 24 megabytes of information into a mere 5 megabytes. So there is no excuse not to have it on any thumbdrive.
