When I "upgraded" to Vista on my laptop this precipitated a lot of "Firefox has stopped working" and "Thunderbird has stopped working when I used these portable applications. Since I am heavily invested in portable apps, this was a BIG problem. I use an SD card on my laptop for the portable applications. After a lot of experimentation, I found that if I changed the drive option from "Quick removal" to "performance", the problem went away. I think the delay associated with writing the buffers for quick removal made Vista think the application had stopped.

I've noticed that when using some applications like Miranda, my application window will pause as the system pages the HD on my mp3 player.

Are there any utilities or programs that disable HD's from sleeping?

I'm sure I won't have this problem with a solid-state solution, but what are my options as an HD user? I've read about Ram Disks, but how does that work?

I've just downloaded many of the apps which will be useful for me.
My question is if I use this on the machines at work will the apps leave any registry info etc behind, anything that will tell them what I've been doing?
Also if I use the Messengers will the people that monitor the internet usage know that I've been using it?

Sorry if this is already answered, I had a look around but I couldent see anything.
Is it possible to install the portable apps menu/programs to, for example, K:\Portable Apps instead of the root of K:\? I want to use my USB Stick for a portable Linux OS (PCLinuxOS) and I know that needs to be in root so i can boot but its makes it harded to find the portable apps launcher.
Any help would be much appreciated.

If you are looking at e-learning eXe is a nice little e-learning content generator which works rather well as a portable app. It is relatively new but is maturing very well and usuable without having any knowledge of the underlying API or XML manifests.

It will export in a few formats (SCORM 1.2, IMS content package, HTML, plain text and i-pod notes) which makes the modules created quite flexible. It is also very good at reusing 'modules' so you can export or import pre-built chunks of content.

I am curious as to the possibility of completely removing all traces of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express from Windows now that I am 100% using Portable Firefox and Portable Thunderbird. I am avid user of nLite and was thinking I could completely remove both programs from the install now. The caveat to that would be if either of the above programs still need some of the functionality of IE or OE to work. I mean I would doubt it, but I suppose it would be possible. Normally some shred of IE is left because of Autoupdates, but that is now taken care of by Windiz.

Hi, I've been using PortableApps for a couple of months now and wanted to add advocacy buttons (similar to the one for Firefox 2 at the bottom of these forums) to my email signature and blog and couldn't find one anywhere. The closest I could get was a simple rectangular image that someone obviously just cropped from the PortableApps site's banner.
Has anyone made any other images for that purpose? Specifically something close in shape and size to the FF one?
