Reading microsoft .lit files

Submitted by darthfredd on May 15, 2007 - 9:30am

I am summoning this topic from the dead. It was discussed once already, but nothing has come of that discussion.

To summarize:
- .lit files are "Microsoft Reader" ebooks.
- There are those among us that would like to read .lit files portably
- The only solution is to either convert the books (which breaks many of them) to another format or install MS reader on every machine.

So how about it, Portable Apps people? Can you find a way to make .lit files readable by any windows machine I plug my drive into?

Love and kisses!

Request: Portable Cygwin (svn, ssh, rsync, ftp, etc.)

Submitted by vparikh on May 15, 2007 - 12:58am

Cygwin would be an excellent candidate for inclusion as a true "Portable App".
It's well suited because of the plethora of utilities that are available with a Cygwin install.
Just the 'rsync' utility alone is enough to make it worthwhile.
A portable rsync would make it extremely easy to create backups of data without going through the pain of doing a full cygwin install on the local machine.
(ailing Windoze machine... I'm sure we've all had to deal w/ one of those)

Essentially Portable Cygwin =
Portable Subversion
Portable SSH
Portable perl
Portable python
Portable ruby

Request: Spacemonger, CCleaner, Xchat

ive used the program Spacemonger for quite awhile, its great for knowing what large garbage is on your PC.

even if its not officially integrated, its still a handy tool for anyone using their Portable apps flash drive as a diagnostic tool (thank god for ClamAV portable, thats was a huge help!)

another good one to integrate would be CCleaner
ive done it already, by creating a .bat file that has the lines:
regsvr32 /s ccleaner.dll
regsvr32 /s CCSubTimer.dll
regsvr32 /s CCSystem.dll
regsvr32 /s lang-1033.dll
start /wait ccleaner.exe

Gvim Portable already Exists :)

Just thought everyone would LOVE to know! GVim is already available as a portable app! I thought it would be listed here but I don't see it. It installed fine and works great! Although I don't use the menu that you have - I don't remember where I got the one I use (it's called Pstart.) I read about it (and portable apps) in Windows IT Pro magazine.

ConText programmers editor

Submitted by jackuul on May 11, 2007 - 6:25pm

"ConTEXT is a small, fast and powerful freeware text editor, developed mainly to serve as secondary tool for software developers. " - http://context.cx

I have used this tool for years now and I like nothing else (it has over 200 highlighters) - it serves me for everything I do and I really admire the person who made it, just the same as I admire those who have created portableapps and the apps that go to it.
