One of the problems that I have as a consultant is not having a full suite of tools when I am off for meetings. Normally I use a Palm T5 for most work. Sometimes, clients have problems that need more sophisticated tools. One of the best open source tools is R, an open source analogue of S. It is extremely powerful (See Modern Appllied Statistics with S - Venables and Ripley) and has the bleeding edge of stats.
I had originally requested a portable implementation from John. However, you can do it yourself, just copy the foler c:/program files/R over to your USB. When you load the USB, you need to navigate to the RGUI module in the BIN folder. Firing that up gives you a very powerful statistical system. It seems to work not badly on a USB key (about 100mb needed). I am still testing it in a USB environment. I have tried it on a "cold" machine on which R has never been installed and it seems to work well and leave no obvious leftovers on the main hard drive.
I have a nice little program launcher app I wrote for my own USB drive. Any chance of having it hosted here?
I can provide source code (in VB...).
As far as I can tell it requires XP to work, although it may also require an installation of office (I know, VB sucks...). If this is the case and enough people want it I'm sure I can get it to work on older versions of Windows.
The Win32 version was just released. Can I have it portable now? Pweeeaaase?
The perfect companion to Portable Thunderbird - Portable YPops!
For those not familar, YPops is an open source gateway to yahoo mail - it basically acts as a localhost POP server, allowing you to download your yahoo mail email into thunderbird, or whatever other pop3 client you are using. Very handy.
It stores settings in ini file.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but wanted you let you know that Gaim is not the only "portable" Internet Messager; Trillian Anywhere is available. Actually its a step-by-step on how to make Trillian run off a USB flash drive. It's a 25mb program vs. 9 mb for Portable Gaim.
It would be nice to see it as a true Portable Trillian, but there might be $$$ issues with Cerulean Studio.
Does anyone know if this writes to the hard drive or registry anywhere? This is a really nice word processor that supports tons of document formats. It comes with an installer but I just moved it to a folder then uninstalled. I know that it creates 2 .ini files the first time you run it, qjot.ini and qjotrecent.ini.
Is there a good portable MD5 check utility?
Does it support other formats?
