Portable App Development

Well, I'm on for Windows Vista Beta 2, and have spent a couple hours testing apps.

Progress:

-Liberta

-Autorun.INF, Backup, Sync, and Log were tested.

-All ran without a hitch.
-Backup works with both zip and 7z formats.
-Sync was tested with two new test catagories, and worked great.
(NOTE: Steve, maybe a refresh button for the categories after changing them, as it requires a restart to see changes/additions.)

-John T. Haller's Portable Appy Goodness

-Portables: Abiword, Firefox, Thunderbird, Gaim, Miranda, FileZilla, OO.o excluding base (not tested), VLC, SciTE, ClamWin, GIMP.

Backup 2.0 is now released. It features a number of improvements over 1.x & 0.x including:

• New Interface
• Support for 7Zip
• Appending Backups
• Over 100% faster

To me, standalone has always meant a single executable file, without being dependant on DLL's. Is there a way of integrating such files like DLL's into the executable? I think this would solve many of the problems on library and school computers that so far are unable to block standalone .exe's from running inside .zip files. If further development is made on standalone apps, it would be helpful if the type of app is labelled on the site, i.e. "Standalone single executable", or otherwise.

Libertà Backup 2.0 RC 2 Released.

General Info

A near complete revamp of Backup 2.0 This version should be much faster (e.g. 100% at least). It also enables all of the previously disabled options.

Sync 2.0 is now released. It features a number of improvements over 1.x & 0.x including:

• Inbuilt Category Editor
• More Efficient Copying

I thought this might be useful to some portable app developers. The program is called UPX Mass Compress (which uses... UPX, who would have guessed?), and it's a simple program that quicky compresses a bunch of dll/exe files. This program saved me lots of time for the two portable applications I maintain, especially with all the dll files in Portable Scribus.

Hopefully this is useful to someone, as I took the effort to make it public. I probably lost the time I saved from using this program, to make it ready for a public release.

I have been looking for a truly portable pdf reader for a while, thought I had found it with Foxit, but it writes to the registry, it occured to me that maybe a plug in for Open Office might be the answer.
