Portable App Development

Creating a legitimate, portable Adobe Photoshop & ImageReady CS2 is entirely possible! Creating a working NSIS-based launcher is still in development, however, these are the exact steps I have taken to reach the nearest point. To write these steps most accurately, I am starting with neither Adobe Photoshop/ImageReady CS2 or its activation license on the machine...

After toying with it for quite some time, I've finally come up with a version of Portable Notepad2 I consider worthy of public release -- PortableNotepad2 0.4.

Portable Notepad2 lets you use the Notepad2 text editor on the go, without leaving mess behind on the current computer. Get it at the Notepad2 project page.

UPDATE: Now comes in two flavors: EXE and ZIP downloads. Waiting on SF.net hosting...

This isn't the final layout or URL, but I wanted some comments from the devs.

I've just implemented the first of the developer features and am looking to have a few folks beta test to see how things are working out. So far, I have implemented:

- Developer Blogs (portableapps.com/blogs/username)
- Developer Test Projects (within portableapps.com/development/projects - not up yet)
- Developer Chat

I already have 3 beta testers. I could use a few more to start trying these things out.

Oh, and everybody is welcome to try out the new chatbox. It's in development/chat.

What would you guys think of the possibility to change the splashscreen?
So you can't only change the theme or the language of your favorite browser,
but also the splashscreen. And maybe there could come a section with the best
splashscreens, maybe a competition.

nm35 and rmccue have released Instant FileZilla, the first in a coming line of Instant programs. This program is one EXE file that extracts FileZilla to the temp directory and then runs it. It then deletes the files upon closure of the program.

I've noticed this: some programs that apear to work portably, actually leave behind files in: C:\Documents and Settings\*User Directory*\Application Data (it's a hidden file) and in other places. When developing apps, it would probably be best to make sure your application doesn't do that.

Programs that do this:
uTorrent
Inkscape
Notepad++
USBOpera (I think so, but then again, since the physical folder is called "Opera" perhaps only the install version of Opera does this.)

Thankfully it only does this to the folder of the user you are logged in as.

I'm new to using Portable Apps.
I just bought a 1GB USB stick last week!

But I use Thunderbird 1.5 and the version of Portable Thunderbird is 1.07

Doesn't 1.07 have security bugs in it?

Is there a 1.5 version due out soon?
