Updates

Submitted by Jacob Mastel on June 22, 2008 - 9:12pm

I'm glad to see all the new activity and new progress comming on the site and it's apps. And it's also nice that the site seems to have gone more and more away from just John working and on to multiple devolpers on apps. I do have one request though. John would it be possible to bring back the updates? I don't think we really need them every single month but every 2 or 3 weeks I think would be appropriate. Also I made a post about it earlier but I didn't get any responses. What is the rule for app themeing?

Menu Question: App Name Retrieval System

Yes, I still want to make an app uninstaller manager for the Platform and since xopher (maggotb0y) has a system of plugins implemented, I could write it in NSIS or AHK and it'll integrate into the future platform. But I would still have to know how the menu gets all the apps stuff. I managed to open up the source (after realizing that I should open the .pas file instead of the .dcu). Of course, I had no real experience in GUI structuring and had no idea how to find the section/method that finds all the names of the menu items.

Backup data

Submitted by Session on June 20, 2008 - 4:31am

I was wondering if I could just rename the folder of the application that I am trying to make portable in order for it to not overwrite settings. I know that this is a quick hack but is it acceptable to do this? Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Session

P.S. Ask if you don't understand what I mean. I don't think its very clear but I was unsure how to word it.

A solution to the development how to's.

I just performed a search browse on for beginner forum topics, here's the relevant results:

  2. https://portableapps.com/node/13702
  3. https://portableapps.com/node/13627

  5. https://portableapps.com/node/12488
  6. https://portableapps.com/node/11959

That's just the tip of the iceberg (it took 5 minutes to find these). We really need a how to.

How do I start a new release?

Submitted by lwc on June 19, 2008 - 7:30pm

You say how to submit a release to you but not how to start it from scratch.

Let's say there's an open source program that I know exactly which files it copies over and which registry changes it makes. How do I take this program and put it under your "portable enforcer" launcher?

Also, do I have a choice whether I want to undo the program's registry changes or to simply block them in the first place?

Thanks!

Themes

Submitted by Jacob Mastel on June 17, 2008 - 12:10pm

Okay I know we were concerned about this a while ago but I think it's time that we reevaluate themeing regulations for apps. I know for a while that the portable apps themes for regular apps like Jooleem were kicked to the curb for legal issues (I have no problems with this just a statement.). Well it seems that themes have started to appear for apps. I know we have 3 soon to be 4 themes for stickies that have been released at the stickies homepage.
