Packaging applications specifically built to be Portable already

Hi there

I'm responsible for the creation of the Strawberry Perl distribution ( http://strawberryperl.com/ ) and for three months during 2008 I was funded by the Perl Foundation to natively implement Portability into Perl.

I'm happy to report that (a few beta bugs notwithstanding) it was a complete success. But now I've got a bit of a problem when it comes to doing the portableapps.com packaging...

Upcoming PAM - Feature Suggestion

Submitted by SilentWalker on January 10, 2009 - 11:24pm

Most school networks block access to the system tray on their computers (you don't even see it) so you can't click on an already running PAM icon to see it. Also it's a hassle to find the root folder of your USB device to double click on "Start PortableApps".

Can we implement (by we I mean you all:-P) a feature like U3's where there a little live button sitting on your desktop that you are able to click to open your running PAM?

WallpaperSwapper like Application

Submitted by jvanzeijst on January 8, 2009 - 6:47am

Hey everybody,

I'm wonderering if there are any portable applications around that opperates the same way that wallpaper swapper does?
wich means:...Load a preffered wallpaper on USB insert and reload original wallpaper when ejecting your USB.
Is it hard to build a similar portable appliction, or could any one tell my how to do that??

Application Support

Submitted by Todd Herbert on January 8, 2009 - 4:14am

Hi There,
I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right forum.
If I submit a portable app do I have to continually support it?
The app is written and works but I possibly will not provide ongoing updates.
Like here,

..you are willing to support it on an ongoing basis (at least 6 months).

What exactly does this mean? Ongoing updates for 6 months or every 6 months?
More or less if my project becomes inactive what happens?

Thanks,
Todd

New launcher and the .NET controversey

Submitted by LinkSlayer64 on January 6, 2009 - 5:07pm

Hello, just got here, but I have used portable apps for sometime now, and thank you all greatly for them. Now my problem; my mom also uses some portable apps I got for her, although I made her my own launcher, and I thought, "hmm perhaps I can have others use this too" just clean it up, add more things, and voila. However, I read that there is a problem with using .NET which I only program using Visual Basic so far unfortunately, being a student.

Multiple Portable Profiles Development Draft Notes (ie Mozila Firefox & ThunderBird)

Submitted by Yogui on January 5, 2009 - 8:10pm

Hi,

I’ve seen there are a few requests for Mozila Firefox & ThunderBird Multiple Profiles support. Some including myself pass –P to launch firefox.exe with an other profile, but then the portability is no the best.

The PAM menu standard is not defined yet but base something in the OpenOffice multiple apps management would be good as a starting point.

Of course we don’t want to make multiple copies of the whole app so in best would be to have Profile Folders may be like
+Data
+Profile
+Profile1
+Profile2
+Profile3

A Security suggestion..."drive last scanned for viruses" prompt?

Submitted by aahhaa on January 4, 2009 - 12:47pm

I don't know how difficult it'd be, but if there was a little

'Time since this drive was last virus-scanned' warning indicator

built-in to the PA launch window, it might save some folks some grief in future.
There is such an elapsed time monitor in Norton, but here the drive might be scanned from within (ClamWin) or without (host machine or net).

I've already forgotten to rescan, and I'm still adding apps!:]
