Updater Icon version 6 beta 2

PortableApps Updater Icon version 6 beta2

Download

Last version made only by me. From now on all of things should be made trough here.
So, give opinions, mockups, ideas, make your own icons, and if someone can arrange me a good CD image in SVG format I would be really happy.

This is teamwork. There is no "me" in here. So, cooperate... and leave sources too.

Some things I think that should stick:

  • Icon must be suitable for all sizes

    • The icon should be made to look ok either at 256x256px or 16x16px. It can be slightly modified, but should maintain its identity.
  • Icon must be allusive to the Updater
    • Think installer, think download; think of things related to installing programs, like Cds, downloads.... Also think portable, think flash disks, think portable hard drives, think iPods...
  • Choose a good color scheme
    • Avoid using an loose random color scheme. Use a good, strict color scheme, that is eye catching. One good color scheme is the Tango one.
  • Don't overload the icon
    • An icon should be simple, so don't put to many things inside

Here are my 2 cents.

Blue is everything.

No problemo

There is no problem. This is teamwork (no, not SPARTA!!! Wink ). I like more the first on the screenshot, btw.

I think...

Mr. Magical's icon (back here) was pretty close to what I was thinking.
Color-wise, with the "sphere" being gray, and the upper arrow being PA-Red, instead of white.

Not sure if having the upper arrow have a "funnel" coming down from vertical would ruin it or not, though.

How about this:

I changed the colors according to your suggestions and here's the result:
PAU Icon Gray and Red edition

As I said, I'm open for any suggestions. If anyone wants the source files, just tell me.

Yes!

Me likes that one very much!

Edit: For the record, John says it looks to much like a sync icon, so maybe try to change that a bit.

No contrast

There's no contrast on the top arrow and it makes it hard to see. What about a white border around the top array?

yeah

How about a white border on the red arrow, and a red border on the white arrow?

Nice,

I think the best way to fix the sync feel would be to flip the red so that the white and the red point the same, then incorporate mrechblau's 'new calendar' look.
Oh, I know!
How about a seedling?

Just a thing

If you could retouch the arrows so they don't get to close of the upper and bottom borders of the sphere, that would be great.

Beyond that it looks great and clean.

Also... could you post the editable files (photoshop template, svg file) of the icon so everybody can use it for their ideas and improve it?

Blue is everything.

Hmm...

I'd say best would be something with the web in it (or else the meaning goes bad, 'cuz we download the apps).

06 looks great. 1

06 looks great. 1 suggestion, if possible. try to make it look like the arrow wraps around the globe and follows the shape of it. Currently it looks very flat and is just floating over the globe.

Did you draw the globe yourself, or did it come from an icon pack?

Update 06b

I've tried to realize your suggestions, but all looks terrible.
Then I make some little changes (you cannot see the time it tooks ;-)),
thats all I could do.
If somebody else will make it better, I'll sent the sources...
Here are the old and the newer one to compare:

Preview

I made the globe in 3D, the texture is a modified world map (I'm not the Lord who could create his own world). So - I think - we could use it without troubles.

I like

the 6 over the 6b.
First I thought it was a nice idea but if I look at it now it doesnt look good. (no offence MrElchbau!)

hmmm I like ...

#5 better. I think the #6 looks too much like the regular portable apps icon, especially as the developement/beta logo, which I think is just the regular in b/w.

The bigger arrow in #5 makes movement more in the logo, which is what an update is about.

I got that part ...

but I feel that it doesn't look like it is different from the portable apps icon especially as you get below the largest icon size.
I like the icons for the various programs to look as different as possible in the left side of the menu.
However, is it going to be on the right-side of the menu, intergrated w/ the rest of the main program functions? In actuality, I'd prefer this app to be part of the "Options" side, than any particular program that I run.
But that's just me. Smile

That is just plain AWESOME!!!

The feel of it is astonishing.
I'm starting to think... Maybe the arrow points to a flash drive. I'm starting to think my cutting and pasting skills in GIMP suck.

Actually, could you make the colored end of the arrow pointy and not colored? That would be great. The previous icons where already perfect, and this is yet better.

Then... maybe replace the colored end with a translucid white plastic looking shape (allusive to an Ethernet cable plug)?

a different invading nation ...

as it seems that your original is pointing to Mongolia. Smile

Oh and I like neorame's style better, as there is a striking colour difference so it doesn't look directly like any of the standard portableapps development icons. Easier to differentiate.

Hm...

I'm starting to think it kinda looks like the USB drive is on the web. I was thinking a USB drive plugged into the arrow.
On the other hand, maybe it'll make a good web browser icon on teh apps list.

i like...

the one that is like the usb version but instead of the usb thingy, it is the green thing. i think that you could use the usb one as a spash screen or something. if you were to use it as a splash, you could use it in the center instead of having the app icon and then the usb icon since the usb is already on the icon.

@neorame do you thing you can send me just the icon set (globe /w/green ended arrow) at my email?
