VirtuaWin Portable Development Test 1

VirtuaWin Portable Development Test 1
Submitted by Bobert on July 18, 2008 - 1:15pm

Application: VirtuaWin
Category: Utilities
Description: VirtuaWin is a virtual desktop manager for the Windows operating system (Win9x/ME/NT/Win2K/XP/Win2003/Vista). A virtual desktop manager lets you organize applications over several virtual desktops (also called 'workspaces'). Virtual desktops are very common in Unix/Linux, and once you get accustomed to using them, they become an essential part of a productive workflow.

VirtuaWin is designed to be simple and elegant to use yet still be highly configurable and extensible.

Please test and report anyu bugs/errors you may fine. I have not encountered any in my testing, but please report any you may find. Smile

I have tested it on XP service pack 3 in a limited account, worked fine.

I could only find one, and it was over a year old. I just made this for myself, and it turned out good so I posted it. I actually forgot to search.:(

cool. does this account for plugin settings as well?

Registry

Patrick did the other one. If I remember correctly, he was having issues with VirtuaWin writing registry entries about the plugins, and there was no way to know what plugins were installed to remove the registry entries. I'm not sure if a new release has been made that changes that, or if you found a way to fix that, but just to let you know.

Yep, registry entries for

Yep, registry entries for plugins were the problem. That was the reasen he removed his app. I made mine available after he removed his with the understanding that people should not use plugins.

Maybe a solution could be the launcher taking in account all the individual plugins as well and handling those correct if they are present. Sounds like a lot of work though.

It doesn't do that, YET...

I am working to see if I can get the plugins to work correctly. I forgot to check about the modules (I just thought it stored the settings in the .cfg file) until it was halfway through uploading it. I'll see if I can get that to work in dev test 2 Smile

the plugins store their settings in either config files, or the registry. but its a whole different matter trying to account for all the plugins without a proper guidelines to making the plugins.

works fine

Works fine on my very low power WinXP SP3 box. Though I would like to know if there is a way for it to run on without the tray icon (I would of course have to kill the process manually) ?

Yes, there is

Setup -> Expert tab -> Advanced options fieldset -> Hide system tray icon checkbox.

If you do this, you can use a task manager like DTaskManager (it is inherently portable, so long as you don't tell it to save its settings in the registry) and its "End Process" to close it friendlily, rather than terminating the process ("Kill Process" with it).

If you ever want the tray icon back, edit VirtuaWinPortable\App\virtuawin\config\virtuawin.cfg, and find the line that says "Display_systray_icon# 0" and change the 0 to a 1. Then it'll come back. Smile
Edit: I'm not using Bobert's version, he may have fixed config storage, in which case it'll be Data\settings\virtuawin.cfg or something like that.

what version

I just downloaded and installed VirtuaWin from their website directly, and they now have settings to set it up to run like a portable app. What version is the portable app using? If it's having problems, it could be that they've been fixed.

Thanks!

This is kinda confusing

The application is great but confusing i would recomend this program instead, http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/Desktops.zip , this program is allso portable and is much easier to use.

There are significant

There are significant weaknesses in Desktops, as is pointed out from this quote from the Sysinternals website:
Unlike other virtual desktop utilities that implement their desktops by showing the windows that are active on a desktop and hiding the rest, Sysinternals Desktops uses a Windows desktop object for each desktop. Application windows are bound to a desktop object when they are created, so Windows maintains the connection between windows and desktops and knows which ones to show when you switch a desktop. That making Sysinternals Desktops very lightweight and free from bugs that the other approach is prone to where their view of active windows becomes inconsistent with the visible windows.

Desktops reliance on Windows desktop objects means that it cannot provide some of the functionality of other virtual desktop utilities, however. For example, Windows doesn't provide a way to move a window from one desktop object to another, and because a separate Explorer process must run on each desktop to provide a taskbar and start menu, most tray applications are only visible on the first desktop. Further, there is no way to delete a desktop object, so Desktops does not provide a way to close a desktop, because that would result in orphaned windows and processes. The recommended way to exit Desktops is therefore to logoff.

Abandoned?

Does anyone know if this project has been abandoned?

Download link no longer works and software version is historic.

Sorry, no I didn't search as this is the only thread that's listed on the Development Test Page. Looking at many of the entries on the page, I guess there is some serious tidying up to be done.
