Portable GNU Cash 2.3.1

The SQL back end is very intriguing especially from a reporting perspective. If anybody is working on this I can help test.

Thanks

You should know the mantra here

@ Zach Thibeau:
Pretty sure xftnfnb7 is asking for an update on the PA release of the 2.3.1 version.

@ xftnfnb7:
You should know the mantra here is, "It'll be done when it gets done." Kinda like, "We'll get there when we get there!"

OFF TOPIC:
From what I read (and I have a habit of starting vicious rumors), it looks like all the developers are busy working on a new, general PortableApps launcher that will become the backbone of new portable apps. John mentioned something and someone else believed he was referring to this.

Now, I've looked at this and I see this as the future of PA since there will be no more compiling of specific PA launchers, only a configurable INI. To me this sounds way easier than compiling a new executable every time a program updates.

Once the new launcher is developed, I am sure we will see updates happening quicker than before.

GnuCash 2.3.x is not stable

GnuCash 2.3.x is not ready to use yet. I have looked at recent windows nightly builds, and find that it is just too early to trust your data with it.

GnuCash Portable 2.2.8 is available from this site, and is stable. I have previously offered to put up 2.2.9 as a portable, and will get it done soon. I am also hoping to get a 2.3.x beta up when it is stable enough to play with.

Shawn Faucher developed the 2.2.8 portable version and may be planning to release 2.2.9 sometime. He does not seem to have been around for a while now. He is the right guy to do this work, but in his absence I can probably keep some releases going. I need to sort out a hosting option, which I will do.

Stability and Testing

I was unaware that 2.3.x was unstable which explains a great deal. If you need any help let me know.

Unstable aka Alpha

2.3.x of GnuCash is the unstable branch. Basically, it's a development branch so it should be considered alpha quality. It should *not* be used as your every day copy of GnuCash. Once it is stable (features added, stability issues worked out, localizations done, etc) it'll become GnuCash 2.4, which will be the new stable branch. 2.2.x is the stable branch of GnuCash and is what you should use. As a general rule, we don't do test builds. The only exception is our major apps like Firefox and sometimes Thunderbird since we need time to work out portability kinks.

From the release notes: "The GnuCash development team proudly announces GnuCash 2.3.1, the second of several unstable 2.3.x releases of the GnuCash Free Accounting Software which will eventually lead to the stable version 2.4.0."

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
