Eraser only does 35 passes on 64 bit Win 7.

Hi folks,

been using Eraser portable fine for a long time in XP, but in 64 bit Win 7, the option to select anything other than 35 passes (Edit>Preferences>Erasing) does not 'stick'. Any danger someone could look into it please? Thanks.

Have you tried "Run as administrator"?

I found that selecting "Run as Administrator" for Eraser Portable let me select one of the other methods for erasing files and folders.

Possible known issue

Eraser Portable has a known issue (posted before on these forums) where it creates a file called eraser.ini in C:\Windows. The file contains the erasing method you select. Thus, when you move to another PC, your erasing method is reset to the defaults as the eraser.ini file does not travel with you (the correct behaviour is for the program preferences to be saved to your USB drive). The Eraser developer posted on the Eraser forums that he wasn't going to fix the bug in Eraser itself because Eraser v5 was soon to be retired in favour of Eraser v6. The creation of the eraser.ini file is mentioned in the source code, so if you knew enough about coding, you could probably fix the problem for yourself. There was a user submitted patch to the Eraser forums for this issue, but sadly the user - who only posted once and never returned - failed to verify that their forum post attachment was posted correctly. The attachment (the patch) was corrupted unfortunately, and as the poster never bothered to return and re-upload it, the issue remained in the last Eraser v5 version. You might want to try EraserDrop Portable instead, I've found it doesn't seem to have this issue.

really?

Mine didn't create a file inside C/Windows. No application should touch that folder imho.

yes

Same here.
Seems like this has been reported before but no one did anything about it.

Yep, it was reported before

That is the PortableApps thread I was talking about - I guess I remembered it because I was the one who last posted to it Wink

Here is the Eraser forum thread where Joel states the problem wouldn't be fixed:

Another thread reporting the same issue (reports from a couple of different users):

Yet another thread reporting the same issue:

And the (corrupted when you download it) user patch for the issue:
