Various suggestion to the site, platform

Site:

1. A dedicated RSS Feed for new app releases only. The apps get updated via the platform, I would not subscribe to a feed telling me about updates, too much noise, but for a feed only telling me about new apps I would subscribe.

2. https://portableapps.com/apps
I almost missed QuiteRSS in the listing as in its description the word 'feed' was not present. I only found the other two with 'feed' in the descriptions at first. RSS and ATOM are also feeds.

3. https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable, https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable_launcher
It would be helpful if you featured the 64 bit download side by side withe the 32 bit version (like you did with other popular downloads), not having to scroll down to find the 64 bit. Being 98% of your downloads 32 bit, scrolling down in just 2% of the cases to find some 64 bit items might not be ideal.

If I understand correctly, downloading 7-zip on a 64 bit machine downloads the 64 bit version, downloading it on a 32 bit machine downloads the 32 bit version? I prefer the choice option of JPortable Launcher.

Platform:

- In searching all apps (following the arrow at the bottom of the screen) I am able to move between them with PgUp and PgDown, so why not with Home and End?

- It would be also nice to scroll down on the main page showing apps by popularity.

Thanks for considering, keep up the good work!

1. We'll eventually have a new apps only feed. Right now we can't support it easily without taxing the server.

2. I added feed in, though it's much more commonly referred to as RSS for all feeds.

3. Almost no one needs the 64-bit variants. The 32-bit variants work everywhere (32-bit and 64-bit machines). The 64-bit variant is basically for Minecraft.

7-Zip is a dual mode app and has both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions built in. It selects the right one for each PC. All our apps that have 64-bit versions work this way.

jPortable does NOT work this way because it is not an app and the 64-bit variant is barely needed.

The scrolling with Home/End is planned.

We don't currently have a live feed of popularity for the platform but it is in the works.

Thank you for the feedback,

Thank you for the feedback, John!

Maybe I was not clear with this. Let me clarify myself.

By scrolling down on the main page by popularity I mean this:

http://cdn.liliputing.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/portableapps.jpg
(Old screenshot with the title 'PortableApps 2.0 coming soon')

The down arrow under app launch icons. So that you can scroll further down to comfortably reach apps just did not make it to the top ones visible. I hope I was clear now.

Thank you.

Not Planned

That screenshot is showing the menu in Show All, Alphabetical mode. It's far easier to find most apps alphabetically/categorically (based on your preference) or by searching than to show a full list of all apps by popularity. The same reason Windows doesn't let you scroll the popular list in the Start Menu either. It just wouldn't be terribly useful.

Okay. Here's the deal. I have

Okay. Here's the deal. I have an app (unofficial, just put it in the apps directory) whose name is only consists of one letter. Don't ask me why - I just let it be as default. Okay with me. Sure, I can rename it to consist of more letters, if that helps.

I use it quite often for a while but it still does not show up in the platform's 'top used apps' list.

If I search for that letter it does not show up either, other apps containing the latter show up on the list but I cannot scroll down to see all of them, see your explanation about the situation below.

So the only tow ways to reach my app is to go to the directory structure (takes a long time) or rename it to more letters and find by the search function.

Fairly uncommon issue I have, I know. Wink

top used list

You can read/edit/tweak the top used list by opening the file:
X:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\Data\PortableAppsMenu
in a text editor. There is a category called [TimesRun].
Mine looks like this:

[TimesRun]
7-zipportable\7-zipportable.exe=15
speedcrunchportable\speedcrunchportable.exe=7
sumatrapdfportable\sumatrapdfportable.exe=30
libreofficeportable\libreofficecalcportable.exe=2

There you can see the numbers and therefore the reason why your app doesnt show. Or you can bumb yours up to 1000 so it will be at the top of the list for some time.

Just make sure you close the platform before editing the file.

Search Box - F3

I understand I can get the search box on the platform by pressing F3. But by which key shortcuts do I hide it? It's annoying I have to use the mouse to hide it. Sad

My suggestion: F3 opens it and a second press of F3 also hides is. Thanks for your consideration.

You can use the Escape key to

You can use the Escape key to close the search box.

As an alternative to open the search box you can also use forward slash "/" (which I find easier since it is closer to the rest of the keys you will use for searching).

Question:Say I have one app

Question:

Say I have one app at the very top of the platform list. If I delete it from the top it will never come up in the home screen of apps or later with use it can come up again at the bottom?

My intention would be not to disappear completely just to go down on the list.

Possibly it would be helpful if I can arrange up and down apps on the list as they appear.

I how you can understand what I mean. Thank you.

Could do so manually.

Nothing to stop you archiving a backup and adding a password with something like 7-Zip or Peazip.

If at first you do not succeed, use more sticky tape.

Platform navigation by keyboard only is broken

I have suggested this before, now I can tell it so you can replicate it.

(Disclaimer: I use a pointing stick)

1. Highlight platform

2. Press F3 as you start to type in something

3. Scroll down to search results with the arrow keys

4. Oops, this is not what you have been looking for, but something else; now you cannot do an F3 search again; you have to manually scroll to the text field with the pointer to do another search

Thanks for the fix

Why Would You Move?

If after typing a few letters you see the search results and realize they aren't what you want, why would you then exit the search field and need to move back?

Either way, if you're in the search results and wish to reset to do another search, just hit ESC and then F3.

ESC does not work then

That's the rub!

Why would I move? Sure, no real reason other than this is how people tend to use computers: if there is a nice list of icons you can scroll over, you scroll over them.

I guess it's just human nature.

Why move?

There's no reason at all to move off the box if the results don't match. And since you're the only one who's ever asked, I don't think it's human nature.

Heck, there's no reason to move at all. You type until the proper match is the top one and just hit enter. No need to even use TAB/arrow keys at all.

You don't need the mouse at all, you can do it just by hitting F3.

I don't really understand

I don't really understand your problem.

1. Highlight platform

2. Press F3 as you start to type in something

3. Scroll down to search results with the arrow keys

4. Oops, this is not what you have been looking for, but something else; now you cannot do an F3 search again; you have to manually scroll to the text field with the pointer to do another search

...Then I can't get to it by keyboard only...

Yes you can!
It works just as I expect it: 1., 2., 3. oops wrong => hit ESC or F3 and I'm back in the search field. Do you use the latest version?
But maybe I misunderstood your concern.

Site suggestion: tags or more categories on the download page

It is not always intuitive which keyword I am supposed to search for when, say, I want to find a CRC/checksum/hash verification app.

New Platform (12) - 2 power button confusion

It has 2 exit power buttons and both try to do the same; exit all my programs and shut down computer.

I use PortableApps on a hard drive partition and I really miss the exit button which just exits the platform normally; thanks!

I have 2 different buttons

I have 2 different buttons, (!) and X

I use PA 12.0.5 on a hd most of the time and the X for close the platform just exits the platform, no powerdown

What is your setting for
Options / Advanced / Close Apps on Platform Exit ?

I have it unticked because I want my Apps to stay open when I close the platform.

Incorrect

This is completely incorrect. There's a close button and an eject/shutdown button. The first always just closes, never shuts down your PC or ejects. The second is either an eject or a shutdown button. In automatic mode (the default) it'll switch based on whether you're on a removable drive (as reported by Windows) or not. You can also right-click it and set it to Automatic, Eject, or Power mode.

For the apps closing, the platform asked you if you wanted to close your apps on exit when the feature was introduced and you selected yes. If you want to change it, you can do so within Options.
