Java Portable 6 Update 16 has been released by PortableApps.com. Java Portable allows you to easily install the Java runtime engine to your PortableApps.com-enabled device for use with portable apps like OpenOffice.org Portable, all without any Java runtime on the local PC. This release updates Java to the latest version. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format for easy use from any portable device and integration with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's completely free.
Features
Java Portable allows you to easily add a Java runtime environment to your portable device. It automatically works with apps in PortableApps.com Format like OpenOffice.org Portable. No Java runtime environment needs to be installed on the local machine and no admin rights are required. The Sun JVM will be downloaded directly from Sun's servers as part of the installation process.
Java Portable Launcher
In addition to using Java Portable with portable apps packaged in PortableApps.com Format, you can also use our Java Portable Launcher to run Java apps in JAR format. It will even automatically portablize the settings of many Java apps.
Java Portable Apps Coming
This release of Java Portable marks the beginning of Java apps on the PortableApps.com Platform. We have an array of Java-based portable apps in testing and will begin releasing them soon.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format
Java Portable is packaged as a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.
Download
The PortableApps.com Installer is available for immediate download from the Java Portable homepage. Get it today!

Thanks John
Hey, all that sounds good but
Hey,
all that sounds good but would you please explain how to use it.
I want to use Angry Ip Scan portably but i don't know what to do with all the files in the java folder.
Too portable for Java.com !
Hi John,
thanks for delivering this - it feels like a new milestone in application portablisation. I hope that it is quick and simple enough for you to produce, so that you will easily keep abreast of new releases from Sun.
For me it works well enough, as I have uninstalled all local versions of Java and my Freemind Portable Edition still does the business.
HOWEVER, if I go to the official Java Test Page then I get the error "Something is wrong. Java is not working.". This is despite using Mozilla Firefox Portable Edition with Options set to Java Enabled, and with JavaScript and Cookies enabled for the page.
As I say, Java Portable 6 Update 16 works, it just that people may need to bear in mind that Sun's own online tests do NOT show it as working. And I'm not sure how easy it would be to spoof these tests with a portable version. (see related thread Do I have Java?)
Again, well done John
PS: I can't seem to find the support page for this app at https://portableapps.com/support
Not for Firefox Portable
Currently at least, Firefox Portable can't use any version of Java other than the local one. This may be fixed in Firefox 3.7 if I recall something I heard correctly. Currently though there's not much we can do without requiring administrator privileges (it's in the admin-only-writing section of the registry), and that's a pretty messy solution and could cause trouble.
So for the moment, sorry, you'll have to wait.
Just to clarify...
So I CANNOT use firefox and java on a portable apps stick to view jmol molecules served via an applet over the wire?
I am in a academic situation where installing the java runtime on the schools computers is not an option.
I'm very sorry to here that.
Correct
Sorry about that. As soon as we can really do something about it, we will though.
thanks, can we Java SDK portable too ?
Thanks for this portable app. Is it possible
to have a portable version of Java SDK too.
that would be really good to use.
Thanks
