Ok, now that we've gotten 1.6 out and done a bit of a reset on what 2.0 (Codename: Leo) will be, I've posted 2.0 Beta 4. This is mainly a rebuild of 2.0 Beta 3 with the 1.6 localizations, minor fixes, Windows 7 taskbar and new installer. So, this is a quick update for those on the beta track adding in all the new fixes and enhancements. We'll be following this up with Beta 5 later this month with some of the long-awaited new features (there's no need to bring them up again... we know... they're coming).
What's New in 2.0 Beta 4 from 1.6?
Theme Switching - Seven colors (Red, Bronze, Green, Blue, Violet, Black and Silver) are included with the PortableApps.com Platform along with the ability to load other themes in PATheme format (an example is included below).
Fixed System Tray Icon - The system tray icon will now properly show and hide the menu, fixing an issue in 1.6 that caused the menu to sometimes not hide properly.

To install, select Options - Theme and then ... and select the .patheme file from where you downloaded it to.
KNOWN ISSUES
Uninstallation Window Slow - For larger apps, the uninstallation window will appear to hang if you try to click on it repeatedly on Vista. It is still running and will still update to show the current directory being removed (unless you click on it and Vista stops allowing the window to update).
1st comment yeah!!!

No, we need it to remind us that this is a forum for humans :P.
On another subject, I take it that the updater needs a bit more bug fixing?

ect ect ect...
how do you install the windows 7 theme?
when i double click on it it asks me which program to open it with.
Go to options, themes, then click the ... and it will let you choose what theme you want.
May the Shwartz be with you
Save it. What you're probably doing is opening it up. Instead, when it prompts to ask what you want to do with this file, click on Save.
Save to some folder in your flash drive. I recommend the "[X]:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\DefaultData\Themes" folder. Then browse for it in the Platform.
Should we have something else as the eject program, such as EjectUSB?
Ignore silly users that PM you on IRC. What? You're one of them?
Why? There are a couple of major reasons why the current program is better. John's been working with it so it doesn't do bad things like killing (terminating) programs, it's written in Delphi (the same language as the Platform).

Ok, maybe you're right, but EjectUSB is smaller in size than the current eject program, as it doesn't feature a GUI.
Edit: Never mind, I just read https://portableapps.com/node/22412 :o
Ignore silly users that PM you on IRC. What? You're one of them?
In addition to the badly closing app comment you linked to below, EjectUSB is also AutoIT-based, which means it will trigger many antivirus programs.

I've never had a problem with this: http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/12/27/usb-disk-ejector-its-free-and-do...
Can be controlled by the command line, can eject the drive it's running off of (copies itself to %TEMP% and invokes itself for that).
Signature automatically removed for being too awesome.
that the exact same program John is using for/with the current 1.6 Platform?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
It's already built-in. It doesn't close software, just ejects the disk properly using the Windows API.

sure would be nice if it told us why windows wont eject (other than that some other program is using it) any clues? how do i get that? close everything? end every process? turn off the computer? or is log out good enough?
;>jamvaru
the thing about Windows, although better than macintosh, still has a fews kinks to work out.
That, my friend, is one of them.
Windows sometimes thinks that your doing something from your flash drive but when in reality your not, and it just doesn't let you 'safely eject' no matter how many times you try.
But its still better than Mac.
I'm with pyromaniac on this one.
Maybe they should get some linux developers on their side and they can make Winblows stable?
Still, I'd rather windows over linux

usually just logging out is enough.
Process Explorer (there is a portable one here somewhere) can search all processes for open file handles on a drive.
Unlocker (there is a portable one here somewhere) can also show what has open files on a drive.
There are also apps like USB Safely Remove, which is payware, but does a very good job of handling ejection. (not portable, so not much use on the move, but very handy for your home machines).
I wonder if there is any way for the PortableApps menu to keep a record of apps started from the menu and then, when the eject is invoked, check to see if any is still open, warning you and offering to close it/them?
OK, that wouldn't allow for the situation where a process is running and hasn't terminated properly, or where handles for files on the USB drive have been left open in error. Nor would it allow for (say) files opened on the USB drive by applications on the host machine. But it would cater for the situation where you've forgotten to close a PortableApps application (Pidgin is the one I most often forget).

doesn't it close stuff for you? kind of like logging out of windows...?
;>jamvaru
no, it just invokes the windows eject function.
sorry for my bad english
Changing the DriveName FontColor is still not supported, right?
The behavior of the Windows 7 taskbar icon is nice.

One more icon on taskbar? It was perfect the icon only visible on the tray area (beside the clock).
Is it possible to configure the PortableApps menu to don't show the taskbar icon?
I was extremely unhappy to see that it no longer minimizes to the system tray! Please fix this!
I'm having the same problem. I liked how the menu stayed out of the way until you wanted to use it. =/

ehm working now. Problem was with dual section "[DisplayOptions]" in one file. Ooops Thanks for support.
The problem is that Windows 7 makes the silly decision to completely hide a new systray icon by default (unlike all previous Windows versions). So lots of less-experienced Windows 7 users think the menu disappears and they need to restart it.
For more-experienced users who prefer the old way and self-configuring it to stay visible, you can disable it:

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Many softwares/upgrades released yesterday !
I like it so much when you move forward instead of spending time talking about concurrent platforms.
So once again, thank you...
Is it necessary for the .patheme file to be available to the P.A.c menu when it starts up? In other words is it just an installation file, or does it read that file each time it starts?
Regards
Nick
It's just for installation. But you'll probably wish to keep it around if you want to switch back to it.

Hi Marko,
is it possible to define a maximum string lenght to be used?
That would fiding the best german terms much easier and we won't have to
work on this issue again later.
Please provide me this maximum lenght and I will work on the issue as soon as possible.

We don't use fixed-width fonts, so we can't tell ahead of time. The way we tell going forward is to test them in the menu and ensure they work right.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
... cause it is easier to shorten the strings to fit them in the menu.
Please add the new locale to the next Beta and this will fix it.

As far as I know, it is not necessary to keep the file (the patheme-files, which is in fact a zip-file with images and an .ini, is just unzipped to a folder somewhere in the PortableApps.com\App program folder.
But you can't store more than one custom theme in the list, and when you chose another one (preset of custom) the theme will be lost.
So it's maybe a clever idea to store the - little - themefile somewhere on the USB stick of HD...
Edit: Agh, this was meant as a reply to ratcatcher's Themes
OK, so you go to eject the drive but you've forgotten to close an application - happens to all of us from time-to-time.
Should/could the eject button:
1. Identify applications still open from the P.A.c drive and offer to close them?
or
2. Instead of going ahead and closing the P.A.c menu, leave (or offer to leave) it open so you can identify and close the application(s) and then use the eject function again?
At present you get an error message saying that the drive can't be ejected but the P.A.c menu is closed anyway so you don't then have access to the eject function - you have to use the Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" utility. OK, it's no great shakes but being able to use the eject button again would be good.

Nick
It's coming in 2.0.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I understand the difference between 1.6 and 2.0 beta 4, but whats new from beta 3? It seems obvious the updater hasn't been implemented yet, so what can I expect when I update the menu?
Edit: From what it seems, nobody knows of any change. So until informed otherwise, I'll stick with beta 3.
Simplifying daily life through technology
As mentioned in the release announcement, it includes all the fixes from 1.6 including better translations and the taskbar icon on Windows 7 (which can be disabled). In addition, it includes a fix from sar3th that fixed a bug in 1.6 with showing and hiding via the system tray icon.
There's no reason not to update from B3 to B4.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I can't believe you keep delaying the automatic updater, and did not even mention it in this post when you claimed (in the Beta 3 thread) that it was coming in Beta 4.
Seriously.
It wasn't delayed because of this release. It's just not done yet. We did this release so that 2.0 Beta users can have all the fixes in 1.6. As is stated in the release announcement on the homepage.
The updater will be posted when it is ready.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
https://portableapps.com/node/20013
"The PortableApps.com Updater has been left off of Beta 3 (it's not quite complete), but will be in Beta 4 shortly!!"
You can't make a statement like that and not expect people to wonder why it's still missing. If it's not finished yet, I totally respect that. But it seems a bit disingenuous to leave it out without even a mention in the release notes.
It IS mentioned in the announcement:
https://portableapps.com/news/2010-02-02_-_platform_2.0_beta_4
Now can we please let this go, stay on topic, and get some work done?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
great work john, now only the ability to create categories
Honestly, every time one of the group who wants them asks, it makes me want to never implement them. Ever. They're coming.
Personally, I used to use categories on Windows, but eventually found it annoying and that it didn't really save any time at all... it actually took more time having to re-categorize stuff all the time. Nearly everyone only uses a handful of programs on a daily or even weekly basis, so you pin those to the start menu (on Windows) or favorite them (in the PA.c menu) so you have them front and center. Then for the infrequent times you need something other than your 10 or 20 most-used apps, you go to the alpha list and fire it up. I mean I've got well over 100 apps installed on my Windows box, but I generally only use 15 of them, so they're pinned.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Yes, that pretty much describes my modus operandi, too, John. The favourites thing on the PA.c menu works fine for me though it would be nice to be able to reorder the items within the menu.
I expect that's coming
Regards
Nick
Guilty.
Said it before and I'll say it again... I really like how the R34 mod handles categories, and it's worth repeating since you spoke about re-categorizing stuff. R34 adds a .pafdata file to the app's root (with appnameportable.exe) that has the category in it. Nothing but R34 touches this file; even if I erase R34 and go back to the official menu, of course my categories aren't maintained, but if I go back to R34... there they are. (Actually, in this case I have to categorize one app from each category -- just one, though -- to make the category, which will then encompass every app that belongs to it. But it's still fine.)
The .pafdata file offers a lot of opportunity. Users could use it to specify font, size, color, and style (e.g. bold, italic). Not currently in R34, it's just an idea since that's pretty much what the .pafdata is otherwise used for.
But it's like another thing I've said before... the official PA.c menu is probably the only app launcher that doesn't support categories, and it doesn't seem it would bother anybody too much (it's not like the official menu is adware, making y'all money) if people who can't wait for categories just use the R34 menu mod/fork. Or Pstart or Appetizer or Asuite or any of the others. They don't have to ride your back about it.
Congrats on the release and keep up the good work.
That's OK for users like yourself that have a good memory - some of us are unable to remember the correct name for all the apps we use infrequently, especially if we have a 100 or so.
That's why we like to arrange them in groups - I would be happy with just being able to rearrange them in any order and being able to add in separators like I do in ASuite, categories are just icing on the cake.
If that's the case, then if you try renaming them that might make more sense. "Audio Editor (Audacity)" for example. Unless you're gonna do 50 categories.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
In my dictionary, I found a picture of you right under "stubborn"
Life is crunchy, anywhere
I do that when building PortableApps.com flash drives to give as gifts. I start with the latest beta (last time it was 2.0 beta 3) and add apps a la carte based on what I believe the recipient will use. Where necessary, I add a description after the name, e.g. to say "Audacity (audio editor)".
PortableApps.com flash drives make great gifts. You could just do the suite, but then all/most of the apps are outdated. Pick the apps yourself, and take the time to configure them. Especially Firefox. Bookmark a couple sites the person would find helpful. Pick out a persona that suits them. PortableApps.com can't do this (modify the software so) but as the end-user, you can. I've given a couple PortableApps.com flash drives as gifts. They're generally well received.
JTH> Honestly, every time one of the group who wants them asks, it makes me
JTH> want to never implement them. Ever. Sticking out tongue They're coming.
Maybe if you had not mentioned in November 2008 that they would coming in the next beta update folks would not be disappointed each time there is a release without categories.
JTH> Personally, I used to use categories on Windows, but eventually found it
JTH> annoying.
It is quite obvious they are not an important issue to you or they would have been done already. But since windows has used groups of programs since version 1.0 that's sort of what people are used to using. I do not need to use file folders to keep papers organized either, I can just put the papers I need up front. It when I need something that is in the back and don't want to waste time searching for it that I am glad I used file folders.
I have quit downloading new PAM releases and just check to see if categories is implemented yet. When the are I will give it a try again, until then I will use MOD R34.
Paul
aw, no custom theme storing. Oh well, still cool, and there are always work-arounds
I'd suggest saving the .patheme files in a consistent directory like X:\Documents\Themes
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Will PA.c eventually facilitate a small theme browser so users can choose from a list of 'installed' themes? This would be great to show off Portable Apps to other people.
Also I think it would be cool to have an 'installer' for themes thus saving regular users from manually copying a theme to the correct locations. Maybe this also make theme distribution more pleasant for people.
I'm sure some great yet simple solution would be possible to have users easily personalise PA.c and switch easily to fit their mood.
Or else perhaps have an officially designated folder for themes (e.g. \PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\DefaultData\Themes\Custom), and then have the file browser automatically open that folder when you go to choose a custom theme, similar to the way the Documents/Music/Pictures/Videos buttons work.
Quamquam omniam nescio, nec nihil scio.
And I like it.
But I'd like to add some suggestions (sorry if hey have been suggested before).
--I'd like a folder that says "downloads" with a neat folder design and everything on the menu. I am always installing a ton of new apps, and because FFP can't run, I have to save and then run the installer. A simple "Downloads" button would really save a lot of time. I saw someplace that said how to make it come up with all the apps, but I'd rather have the button right on top of Explore
--How about Hot Keys? I like Ctrl + Alt + Home for making it appear. I had that on CodySafe's Menu. It allows you to choose hot keys (for those of you that haven't heard of it). [and if there are hot keys what are they?]
--Install by URL. Maybe under Options, there is a option to "Install by URL" then it says "Enter URL" then it says "thanks Pyromaniac for requesting that" at the bottom of the window.
--Remember apps? Everytime I run the menu it loads even though I installed nothing. Maybe in "Options" you could say "Load apps on startup" with a checkmark so you could uncheck it. You could make a .ini that the menu reads so it doesn't have to load it every time.
--How about a little picture for the menu... maybe at the top right hand corner? I'd like that a lot!
Hotkeys - already implemented (though I can't remember it off the top of my head...)
Remember Apps - would be a lot of work with very little practical purpose
Install by URL - this will be made pointless by the updater
Picture for the menu - try clicking in that blank space in the top-right corner of the menu and see what happens
Quamquam omniam nescio, nec nihil scio.
Win - Alt - Space can show/hide the menu
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hmm... it doesn't seem to be working for me in Windows 7. The key combination hides it fine, but I can't get it to come up with the hotkey. Haven't noticed before because I never tried it before. Of course, between DeskPins and VirtualBox in seamless mode, I may have some issues with focus stealing...
Quamquam omniam nescio, nec nihil scio.
I just noticed the 2.0b3 thread is still stickied but this one isn't. Shouldn't beta 3 be unstickied and this put up in its place?
Fixed it

I tested that platform and It's working very good, for me better than 1.6 platform
(sorry for poor english, I'm russian and use a Google translate)
I don't know where to write my wish here, therefore i posting here.
Please, make the main Port.platform window lessly\less, it will be great/cool ) for me, because it window is very big..
Version 2.0 is STILL useless unless someone puts the "Add External Program" into "Options" and i'm not talking about .paf's but REAL executables from ANY path.
I don't know why this option has not been implemeted FIRST!?
You can already add *any* portable software you want to the PortableApps.com Menu:
https://portableapps.com/support/portable_apps_suite#addingotherapps
This has been supported since the very first release. Just move the app to the right spot and if there are any extra EXEs, you can right-click and hide them in the menu.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I'm a bit shocked by this comment. I appreciate, wizzel, that you may be a major contributor to the development of PortableApps - in terms of time, financial contribution or both - and may, therefore, have strong feelings.
Nonetheless this still comes across as rather disrespectful and negative. Perhaps English is not your first language and you are unaware that the phrasing could be regarded as offensive.
As John points out, if you put any application at the correct directory level on your PA.c device, the exe(s) will be picked up by the menu. I have done exactly this with a programme called Ameol which I use on a daily basis. It has worked without a hitch in this way for well over a year (possibly longer - I lose track).
Regards
Nick
You have just embarrassed yourself. That feature is already implemented. Copy your software folder to the PortableApps folder.
I like the updated themes. Green actually looks green now, and with 10% transparency, it's absolutely stunning. Good job on that. Blue looks better, and bronze and official look less ugly (sorry, it's hard to get me to say anything nice about red, orange, and yellow). Black still looks too light due to the gradient, though.
Rocking 2.0 Beta 4 with Green/10% now. I'll probably do the same at home (where we have the 1.6 beta or final) and do Blue/10% since my wife favors the blue.
Too bad the themes use static images as opposed to being drawn from instructions/variables. That would make it scalable, and you'd be open to a wider variety of colors. Specifically, to match it to a Windows 7 setup. Maybe even have an option to mooch those settings from Windows so it matches perfectly.
because of the post on https://portableapps.com/node/17730#comment-140520 I've tested with OpenOffice.org Portable 3.1.1. and the upcomming 3.2.0. and the Beta 4

Ok, first of all i don't need anyone here to find excuses for my "badass" posting about the missing categories in beta 4. If English is not my first language is of no business to anyone. Everyone knows that i'm talking about categories like they have been "correctly" implemented in the R34 MOD and not some "workaround".
But it shows that the people who work on the official launcher don't have the technical skills to really improve the PortableApps menu.
Sorry to offend you, but it cleary shows...
There is really no explanation why it's so hard to implement functions that are already in the R34 MOD. I just didn't want to mention it, but LiberKey is a million miles ahead of a rusted and technologically lacking PortableApps.com that is better in finding excuses for what they didn't do, rather then doing something "major". That for example would be telling people the truth: We are simply unable to implement "cool stuff" within a decent time.
And no: I don't contribute anything to PortableApps or LiberKey.
Just took my right to post what i am thinking about the whole situation.
I'm just a user that is not satisfied with something i didn't even pay for.
Just my 2 cents. Thanks for reading. Now hate me and delete my account.
So that means you won't read my witty replies?
We don't get on people whose english is not there first (or second or third).
Yeah, really, you are right. The only explanation is that John doesn't want to do them or doesn't want to find time to do them At any rate, you are welcome to use other menus.
No, that's Asuite. Its not liberkey's own menu. You could use Asuite if you'd like.
Gee, thanks. We're volunteers. So, volunteer and implement that cool stuff you want so badly, or shut up.
Great!
Its a right? Nope, its a privilege. And you're abusing it.
Aren't you glad that you didn't pay for it? Now you can delete it and be on your way. Good bye.
Honestly, I myself am unsatisfied with the menu. But, I can't contribute. I don't know what else John is doing, or why. I'm pretty sure its not the menu. But that's his choice. Its his money hosting the site, so he may do as he wishes. Most of my opinions on subjects (such as a universal launcher) have been thrown to the wayside. That's fine. I always have the option of leaving. Or, I have the option of trying to make it better. I waste enough time here, I don't have anymore to give. So, either I must accept the current situation, or do something about it. At this point in time, I must accept the situation.
I've refrained from voicing displeasure because about a hundred other people have registered for the explicit purpose of telling a man who volunteers his time and money to (paraphrase mine) 'get his ass in gear or else'.
Or else what? You'll switch to another free product? You won't donate any more then you never have? It doesn't help. It doesn't encourage John, really. Its just stuff he already knows from hundreds of other people. So, I'll keep my trap shut.

In that case, if you don't like how it's being developed you have two choices:
1. Contribute to the development in some form, or
2. Stop using it and find something else you prefer.
Either way there's no excuse for being rude and disparaging about others' efforts.

The responses to your first posting was about you complaining that you couldn't add non-PAF apps, to which I responded that you can and have been able to since v1.0 of the menu. If you want a manually configured menu, you're perfectly fine to use something like PStart or Asuite, which is based on it (and is, incidentally, what is used by the illegal software project you mentioned). If you want our format but with categories, you're welcome to use MODR34 or Geek.menu, which are both forks of the PortableApps.com Platform with some features added and other features missing.
Basically, you're fine to use whatever you want, because we don't lock you into having to use our menu to use our apps (ours work with any of the previously-mentioned menus or completely standalone). Nor do we lock you into only using our apps with our menu (you can use any app you'd like from any publisher as long as you drop the files in the right place).
Plus, as already mentioned in previous threads, and as briefly mentioned in the main announcement, categories are coming. They're just going to be properly implemented and working with the categories that are built-in to the PortableApps.com Format (and in 51 languages so that they show up properly by default for everyone). The translations were recently completed and included in the current 2.0 Beta 4 release (if you browse to PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\Locales, you'll see the translations with things like APP_MENU_CATEGORY= in them already) and the GUI elements of it will be included in an upcoming beta.
In the end, if you'd like to retire from PortableApps.com, that's your choice. If you're trying to get banned on purpose by making some 'stand' for something by being rude, that's your choice, too.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
