Help! with a really slow/old computer

One of the workstations that I use my portableapp suite on is a Pent. 4 2.00 ghz with 522k ram and runs windows 2000 sp4. I am not an administrator so installing new software or making changes is virtually impossible hence the use of portable apps suites. I carry the usb drive from various locations. all are connected to T1 line via a corporate proxy. My question is this is there a recommend browser that will work with best with this machine. Current Firefox and opera lag and hang up, chrome doesn't even work. I use Opera 10.50 and Firefox 3.6 on all of the other machines fine but plugging my usb into this one and its like going back in time to when Al Gore invented it. I would imagine that there is a legacy version of the above browsers that will work better with win2000 I am just not sure how far back I need to go or where to download. all help is appreciated.

Why not try...

You could try K-Meleon Portable which is based on Mozilla like Firefox. It's pretty lean but works perfectly fine for casual browsing. I think it should work on Win2K.

Btw I have an P3 800Mhz with 512MB RAM that I can run Firefox on just fine. Sounds like that computer is in need of some tender-loving care.

Perhaps the USB interface is 1.1 rather than 2.0 so apps in general will be slower. Nothing you can do about that really, in your situation. (since adding a USB 2.0 card is not an option for you).

System properties claim that

System properties claim that it is a usb 2.0 hub, It could be that the processor is taken with the network software as well, but when looking at task manager that doesn't seem to be the case. I will try K-Meleon Portable.

Temp Files

Maybe it just needs a damn good cleaning then! i.e. Temp file/registry cleanup.

Of course, I'm sure it's locked down tighter than a network at a CIA convention, so there isn't much you can do.

make sure you install noscript extension. Its pitiful protection compared to using the latest ff and noscript, but it will help

Too many bridges you can burn
Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world
