Wow, thanks for taking

Wow, thanks for taking another Regshot! Must be my lucky day or something. Smile

From what I can tell (I ran Iron in a sandbox instead of doing a standard Regshot, since I can't shut off my AV software or my Internet monitor, both of which spew Registry junk all over the place), Iron doesn't use the Registry. It just leaves a folder in $LOCALAPPDATA; right now, I'm using the backup & restore method but I'm contemplating trying to redirect it instead. Any thoughts on that?

+1 for redirect

I would think the the redirect would be safer. However I'm guessing it will be more difficult to implement. If you can do it, my vote for a redirect Smile

I'll see what I can do. Not

I'll see what I can do. Not sure how easy/hard it's going to be, but I imagine it wouldn't be that difficult; probably just a couple of API calls.
I've got my hands full with other things atm, though, so it's going to have to wait for a couple of days.

No redirect

There's no redirect you can do for $LOCALAPPDATA. Backup and restore.

OK, thanks for the info. Now I don't have to bang my head against the wall after a dozen failures; very nice to know in advance.

It will be using the full SHGetFolderPath method, which means you shouldn't do it.

Redirecting %LOCALAPPDATA%

Redirecting %LOCALAPPDATA% would mean redirecting it for the entire system then, right? Definitely not a good idea.

It's just for the process and all subprocesses, but it requires changing USERPROFILE as well; this ends up breaking the file chooser, leaving things that shouldn't be there in your Data directory (the opposite of leaving traces on the host machine... it leaves traces in your portable application's Data directory), and it can make any processes that Iron spawns (e.g. downloads) go bad too if they do things in the user profile (and almost all do).

OK, I understand now. Thanks

OK, I understand now. Thanks for the clarification!

I suppose changing %USERPROFILE% and %APPDATA%, then reverting %USERPROFILE%, reverts %APPDATA% too?

They're distinct environment variables, just for SHGetFolderPath they must be set relative to one another or it will return "". (Just leave them all alone and you're fine!)

OK, I think I finally have the whole confounded relationship under my belt. Thanks for patiently explaining all this!
I wasn't planning to modify anything after you said it can't be done, but I was still curious (as usual).

Cheers!

If I can get that redirect working, I'll need you to test it again - redirects can be funky things.
nvm - see above.

Does anybody know if Iron is

Does anybody know if Iron is still being developed? Chrome is several versions ahead at this point, and no sign of life on the Iron page (last build, 4.0.28, was a month ago).

They offer a portable version on their homepage, yes, but it's not in PAF format. My dev test is. Wink

knowledge

1) "Does anybody know if Iron is still being developed ???"

YES... of course. Developing is speedly to go for 5.0

2) "Chrome is several versions ahead at this point ???"

NO... Chrome stable version is 4.0.249.89, (which is that version) comparable to Iron 4.0.280.0 stable) .... Iron has "much more newer build" !!! than Google Chrome.

3) "no sign of life on the Iron page (last build, 4.0.28, was a month ago) ???""

SRware Iron team recently pretty hard working on 5.0 (probably will be a "BETA" ,...but more stable than usual "Google Chrome BETA")

According Iron dev team, this version could be done in a few weeks!

There will be including some new features from Chromium 5.0 - comprehensive Content filtering, language translator for webpages, more security, speed etc.

Iron is much ahead of Chrome ! No backwards!

Thanks for the information

1) Glad to hear it!

2) I was referring to the Chrome beta; I hadn't seen any sign of a similar Iron beta, hence my statement. (Chrome beta = 5.0, Iron = 4.0.28)

3) Great, I'll keep an eye out for that build.

z25blinkIron is much ahead of Chrome ! No backwards!

I completely agree. Smile

Cool, but enforced delay :(

Thanks for the heads-up!

Unfortunately, I am getting my computer ready to send in for repairs at the moment (Toucan & portable apps are so nice for this kind of thing - so much better than my old setup), so I'm totally out of things for at least 3 days and probably closer to a week. I'll get back on it as soon as I can, though.

Things going much faster than expected here too!

My laptop got back this morning - only gone for 4 days instead of the expected 1.5 weeks. I have a great respect for HP tech support... Smile
PAL made life much easier, too. The portabilization process took about 30 minutes instead of an entire afternoon like last time.

Anyway, the alpha's posted; have fun with it!

Is the 5.0 link dead?

I cannot get a response from the 5.0 link.

From the SRWare website there is no 5.0 version yet.

Are you referring to my PAF-build links? I just checked and they're both still up, so I'm not sure what's going on.

There is a 5.0 version on the SRWare website; it's just not listed on the download page.

Got it.

It's working now. Thanks.

I see you are referring to the forum, not the download page.
I believe that is where I got it before.

I've been using th 4.0 version and love it.
Fast, and no bugs found.

Does the locally-installed

Does the locally-installed version have the same problem? If it does, the problem is with Iron (as opposed to Iron Portable). If the local version is quick on Google Reader, please let me know (because that would be a bug with the portable version) and I'll see if I can fix it.

Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you like Iron!

Updated, 2010-06-05; see above for details.

z25blink, I'd like to thank you for keeping me up-to-date on the latest available versions of Iron. I really appreciate that, since it saves me time & trouble with update checks.
Have fun with the new release! Smile

EDIT: I need people to do Regshots on the new version. There may possibly be a single file - %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp\chrome_shutdown_ms.txt - left behind. I have not seen this file left behind on my computer, though.

Thanks for the Regshot. This

Thanks for the Regshot.
This isn't looking good - it's leaving HKCU\Software\Chromium and trash in %LOCALAPPDATA%. I've seen both on my computer, but I can't seem to tie them to Iron Portable.
I can take care of HKCU\Software\Chromium, but I can't do a darn thing about that %LOCALAPPDATA% trash until I can reliably reproduce it and figure out what's going on.

I'm going to try some more tests and see if I can find a reliable trigger for this stuff.

UPDATE: OK, this really stinks. I mean, it really stinks.
I still can't find a reliable trigger for the %LOCALAPPDATA% junk. I was able to pin it to Iron Portable once, though, and that's good enough for me. I've added instructions to deal with that.
As for the HKCU\Software\Chromium junk, that shows up on every run. I've dealt with that now.
Unfortunately, fixing those bugs means more trouble - now the launcher has to wait around for Iron to end, which could mean the launcher ends up waiting for a local version of Iron too. What do you think I should do about that, Chris?
Never mind. PAL is already handling that with SingleAppInstance and SinglePortableAppInstance.

Chris, once we work out the details for the settings folder renaming (see my answer to your post below), I'll drop a new DT with the fixes applied.

Keep previous installation settings?

Thanks for updating this! I just had a minor annoyance in that my settings from my previous installation (bookmarks, browsing history, etc.) were wiped after installing the latest update over my previous installation.

I'm not sure whether this is a general Iron problem, but I was under the impression that PA installation should keep your previous data.

However, with the bookmark sync feature, this issue was readily resolved Wink Thanks for your hardwork and keep it up Smile

I apologize

I apologize for that. PortableApps installations should keep your previous data, and previous Iron Portable releases did just that. However, I made a change to this release so Iron Portable's settings are redirected instead of backed up & restored. This means less wear & tear on your USB drive, less chance of data loss, and less chance of conflict with any local Iron installations. Unfortunately, that change also means this version of Iron Portable cannot read settings from previous versions of Iron Portable. I meant to put a warning in the release notes, but forgot to do so. I've added it now.
Future versions of Iron Portable will use the same redirection method this version of Iron Portable does, so this shouldn't happen again. Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience.

Settings migration

I gather from what you say that your settings now go in a different location; I'd suggest that you add custom installer code to rename the directory if that's all it is (which I presume it is).

I just checked and it turns

I just checked and it turns out that's exactly what the end result is. I'm sure you're probably wondering what the heck I'm doing, breaking settings with a simple directory rename, so I'd better explain...
Instead of doing a DirectoryMove (like older versions of Iron Portable did), I looked at the "official" portable version of Iron from SRWare and saw how it was sending Iron the data-storage folder (a simple command-line argument). I then changed Iron Portable's launcher to do the same thing.

My personal version of Iron Portable was pretty heavily messed up (primarily because of problems with the old way) so I didn't realize that the end result was basically a directory rename until I tried a clean installation of the old Iron Portable a few minutes ago.

Anyway, I agree with you. I should definitely add some custom code to take care of the settings-moving. However, I have a couple of questions.
#1: how long is this custom settings-moving code staying in Iron for?
#2: settings used to be stored in IronPortable\Data\Chromium\User Data. They're now stored in IronPortable\Data\IronPortableData. Look at the folder depth - the old way stores information one level deeper than the new way. Should I really do a file-move operation? (An Iron Portable data folder can reach 20 MB or more)

Custom code

In Data Crow Portable, I've got custom code to handle just your sort of situation. In the latest release, I went from having Data\settings to having Data\data, and Data\webapp\datacrow\mediaimages to Data\mediaimages. Here's more or less what you'd need. (This then removes Data\Chromium completely, not sure if that's exactly what you want.)

Such code as this I just keep in indefinitely (as long as it doesn't clash with any previous update, it happened that way with Data Crow with keeping the webapp directory, but that update path became obsolete in the latest release so I overwrote it). It does no harm, and it does secure the upgrade path. I can't really think of any reason to ever remove such code.

!macro CustomCodePreInstall
; Handle update from = 5.0.380 DT1.
; Data\Chromium\User Data became Data\IronPortableData
IfFileExists "$INSTDIR\Data\Chromium\User Data" 0 +3
Rename "$INSTDIR\Data\Chromium\User Data" "$INSTDIR\Data\IronPortableData"
RMDir /r "$INSTDIR\Data\Chromium"
!macroend

Perfect, thank you!

I just tested that and it does exactly what it's supposed to. The new version of Iron Portable doesn't recognize all the old Iron Portable settings, but it recognizes enough of them that it's almost certainly an Iron issue as opposed to an Iron Portable issue.
I'll upload the new DT right now.

Thanks for the code!

Crash while editing bookmarks

(I hope this is an appropriate place to put this.) I just installed the trial version of Iron and ran into a problem while trying to clean up bookmarks. Clicking on the wrench and going to bookmark manager, if I attempt to delete multiple bookmark folders at one time, the program crashes. I can delete individual folders without a problem. I can delete a group of bookmarks at one time, just not a group of folders.
Keep up the good work.

That sounds like a problem

That sounds like a problem with Iron, not Iron Portable, so you'll probably need to contact SRWare.
Does the installed version of Iron have that problem too, or just Iron Portable?

EDIT: upon re-reading your post, it looks like you're using the installed version of Iron (not Iron Portable). If that's the case, the problem is definitely with Iron and you'll need to contact SRWare.

Well, I really appreciate the help. Frequently things don't show up on my system that do show up on others, and now that Sandboxie won't work for me (no idea why - it just started tossing error messages, and I can't seem to get it fixed) I'm nearly helpless when it comes to testing portability.

If it's not too much trouble, could you please RegShot the new DT and make sure it's clean?
Thanks!

Looked clean on this end. Nothing added App Data no more. If you really want the actual data I can post it but as said looks like you resolved it.

Don't bother with the actual data, as long as nothing showed up in %LOCALAPPDATA% or the Registry it should be OK.

Re: Crash while editing bookmarks

First of all, I initially had the problem with the portable version. I was running an XP machine at the time.

Acting on the suggestion that this might be an Iron problem, I installed Iron on my desk top machine (Windows 7) and was able to duplicate the problem. Looks like I need to send a note to the Iron folks.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm glad everything's working

I'm glad everything's working for you!

Now, I have a very important question for all Iron Portable users. Do you think we're ready to ask for Pre-Release status?
In my opinion, we're ready to go. Iron Portable has been around for 5 months; there have been few problems, and the problems that have been found have been fixed.
However, I can't speak for all of you; I don't know what your user experience is, I don't know how Iron Portable behaves for you. Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Just a small thing:

It seems to me that Iron's default setting is to save files to "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads". You might want to change the default setting to prompt the user where to save.

Yeah, that seems to be the default. It's also where Firefox Portable defaults to saving files, so I don't think there's a need to change that (particularly since PortableApps.com packages aren't really supposed to change settings unless they affect portability).
I am willing to consider making a change, though, if there's support for it. Also, what default save location would you prefer?

I just set it to "Ask".

IMO the best idea would be to some folder on the same volume as the program.

Sorry guys

Sorry guys, I tried doing that with the latest version of Iron Portable and it failed miserably. Iron's settings file is a nightmare to work with: settings are saved in a C++-like braces system, and lines are frequently missing (apparently, settings aren't saved if they have their default values). The end result of my test was a corrupted prefs file.
I'll talk to Chris Morgan and see if the two of us can work something out, but it's not looking good atm.

I. Am. An. Idiot.
The solution finally occurred to me: take an Iron Portable prefs file, clip out everything except the settings we want changed, then put that in DefaultData. It works nicely, so the next DT of Iron Portable will have the download location set to "ask" and Iron will no longer ask about being set as the default browser.

Portable SRWare Iron 5.0.381.0 on Windows NT 2000

-Beta Testing forum

Portable SRWare Iron 5.0.381.0 on Windows NT 2000

When I launch Portable SRWare Iron 5.0.381.0 on Windows NT 2000 service pack 4 I have a popup windows:

"le point d'entrée de procédure RtlCaptureContext est introuvable dans la bibliothèque de liens dynamiques KERNEL32.dll."

Same if I launch Iron.exe directly.

and Iron dont run.

---------------------------
C:\PF3\IronPortable\App\Iron\iron.exe 1,02MB ( 1 069 056bytes)
C:\PF3\IronPortable\IronPortable.exe 189KB ( 194 016bytes)
---------------------------

Any idea ?
Problem on Iron?
Problem on W2000 ?
Or on my own computer ?

Run fine on Windows XP2 for me on another computer.

Unsupported OS

Being based on Chrome/Chromium, Iron doesn't work on Windows 2000. Windows XP is listed as the minimum supported OS for Chrome.

Ready to go!

SRWare says they're ready for us to go official; they will be hosting the official release on their servers.
I'm ready for the official release when you are, John! Smile

Installer 2.0.3

Nice. I'm gonna post Installer 2.0.3 in a bit. So, we'll go with that as soon as it is up.

Be sure and have them host it in a consistent place so we can link to it. It needs to be a URL ending with the actual filename. And they'll need to host the old and new once a new version gets posted until we scan the new, verify it and switch over to it.

Great. I'll keep an eye out for the 2.0.3 installer, and get Iron Portable repackaged as soon as possible. Do you want me to include an official splash screen with that repackaging as well, or should I do a separate rebuild for that?

I'll pass along your instructions about the links; that shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you!

I believe I should be able to give this a thorough test tomorrow (Tuesday). I'll try to do that and get back to you with results. Hopefully the testing will be fairly uneventful.

I'm expecting your tests will be totally uneventful. I've been using Iron Portable since I started packaging it, and it's been the only browser I've used for the past 3 months. I've had no issues at all on my XP Pro SP3 system and my parents' XP Home SP3 system, and nobody's reported a problem on any other OS, so I think we're good. Another test is always a good thing though.

Thanks!

Test report

Here's my thorough test report Smile

You're right, it is well constructed. A Regshot report conducted after other testing seems to be clean.

Short version:

  • There are a few minor things in appinfo.ini which don't really affect anything but I felt like raising.
  • Language switching should be implemented, and language separation in the installer to save space. Code provided
  • PortableApps.com Launcher source shouldn't be included.

Now the long version:

A few minor notes concerning App\AppInfo\appinfo.ini:

  • You should have a blank line between each section.
  • AppID should be between Name and Publisher rather than lower down
  • I think I'd change the Description.

    Description SRWare Iron: The browser of the future - based on the free Sourcecode "Chromium" - without any problems of privacy and security

    It just doesn't feel quite right. Based on how we tend to do it with other apps, I think I'd put it more like "Iron: the browser of the future - Chrome without any privacy or security problems" or something like that.

  • When an app is a Development Test, the DisplayVersion should be 5.0.382 Development Test 1; there should be no need to ever rename the generated installer.

Then there are two other things.

Languages: this is actually two things in itself. First of all, I think you should split the language files into an optional section, as that would save over 6MB. Just to see what would happen (I expected a crash) I tried removing the locales directory (including en-US.dll inside it). It actually didn't crash - except the page crashed when it tried to show a timeout error for iron-start.com (and srware.net - I'm not very impressed by those). And all the UI text magically took on its background colour Wink

Anyhow, I think you should put this in as App\AppInfo\installer.ini:

[OptionalComponents]
OptionalComponents=true
OptionalFile1=App\Iron\locales\am.dll
OptionalFile2=App\Iron\locales\ar.dll
OptionalFile3=App\Iron\locales\bg.dll
OptionalFile4=App\Iron\locales\bn.dll
OptionalFile5=App\Iron\locales\ca.dll
OptionalFile6=App\Iron\locales\cs.dll
OptionalFile7=App\Iron\locales\da.dll
OptionalFile8=App\Iron\locales\de.dll
OptionalFile9=App\Iron\locales\el.dll
OptionalFile10=App\Iron\locales\en-GB.dll
OptionalFile11=App\Iron\locales\es-419.dll
OptionalFile12=App\Iron\locales\es.dll
OptionalFile13=App\Iron\locales\et.dll
OptionalFile14=App\Iron\locales\fi.dll
OptionalFile15=App\Iron\locales\fil.dll
OptionalFile16=App\Iron\locales\fr.dll
OptionalFile17=App\Iron\locales\gu.dll
OptionalFile18=App\Iron\locales\he.dll
OptionalFile19=App\Iron\locales\hi.dll
OptionalFile20=App\Iron\locales\hr.dll
OptionalFile21=App\Iron\locales\hu.dll
OptionalFile22=App\Iron\locales\id.dll
OptionalFile23=App\Iron\locales\it.dll
OptionalFile24=App\Iron\locales\ja.dll
OptionalFile25=App\Iron\locales\kn.dll
OptionalFile26=App\Iron\locales\ko.dll
OptionalFile27=App\Iron\locales\lt.dll
OptionalFile28=App\Iron\locales\lv.dll
OptionalFile29=App\Iron\locales\ml.dll
OptionalFile30=App\Iron\locales\mr.dll
OptionalFile31=App\Iron\locales\nb.dll
OptionalFile32=App\Iron\locales\nl.dll
OptionalFile33=App\Iron\locales\pl.dll
OptionalFile34=App\Iron\locales\pt-BR.dll
OptionalFile35=App\Iron\locales\pt-PT.dll
OptionalFile36=App\Iron\locales\ro.dll
OptionalFile37=App\Iron\locales\ru.dll
OptionalFile38=App\Iron\locales\sk.dll
OptionalFile39=App\Iron\locales\sl.dll
OptionalFile40=App\Iron\locales\sr.dll
OptionalFile41=App\Iron\locales\sv.dll
OptionalFile42=App\Iron\locales\sw.dll
OptionalFile43=App\Iron\locales\ta.dll
OptionalFile44=App\Iron\locales\te.dll
OptionalFile45=App\Iron\locales\th.dll
OptionalFile46=App\Iron\locales\tr.dll
OptionalFile47=App\Iron\locales\uk.dll
OptionalFile48=App\Iron\locales\vi.dll
OptionalFile49=App\Iron\locales\zh-CN.dll
OptionalFile50=App\Iron\locales\zh-TW.dll

That's a listing of all the files, except en-US.dll (a pain, I know). And yes, more than 10 files does work with OptionalFileN.

Then secondly with languages there's language switching for the launcher. With the PortableApps.com Launcher this is very easy to put in. Here's the INI data I just wrote for App\AppInfo\Launcher\IronPortable.ini:

[Language]
Base=%PortableApps.comLanguageCode%
CheckIfExists=%PAL:AppDir%\Iron\locales\%PAL:LanguageCustom%.dll
DefaultIfNotExists=en-US

[LanguageStrings]
en=en-US
ar-sa=ar
es-mx=es-419
tl=fil
no=nb
pt=pt-PT
pt-br=pt-BR
zh-cn=zh-CN
zh-tw=zh-TW

And then to use it, tack --lang=%PAL:LanguageCustom% on to [Launch]:CommandLineArguments - CommandLineArguments=--user-data-dir="%PAL:DataDir%\IronPortableData" --lang=%PAL:LanguageCustom%. I have tested all this with English and French and it was working as expected.

Launcher: you shouldn't have the PortableApps.com Launcher source in there. Just get the Template from the Launcher download page as well and apply it to get the Other directory, and run the Generator from the main Launcher download. There's no copying of Launcher source code any more.

Edit: just realised I didn't try installing themes, dictionaries or extensions. I'll need to test that another day, and make sure that they're going in Data and not in the currently empty directories App\Iron\(Dictionaries|extensions).

Thank you!

Chris MorganA few minor notes concerning App\AppInfo\appinfo.ini:

You should have a blank line between each section.

I deleted the blank lines back when I was manually recompiling PAL using NSISu (it couldn't handle those for some reason) and forgot to put them back once I switched to the Generator. That's done now.

Chris MorganAppID should be between Name and Publisher rather than lower down

Changed. Just out of curiosity, does that make a difference in how the launcher or installer works?

Chris Morgan think I'd change the Description.

I've tweaked that a little bit. Does it look OK now?

Chris MorganWhen an app is a Development Test, the DisplayVersion should be 5.0.382 Development Test 1; there should be no need to ever rename the generated installer.

Changed, thanks. I actually wasn't aware of that policy, but I'll implement that in all my apps from now on.

Chris MorganLanguages: this is actually two things in itself. First of all, I think you should split the language files into an optional section, as that would save over 6MB. Just to see what would happen (I expected a crash) I tried removing the locales directory (including en-US.dll inside it). And all the UI text magically took on its background colour Wink

Anyhow, I think you should put this in as App\AppInfo\installer.ini: <snip>

Done, thanks. I was actually meaning to do that a couple of DTs back, but never got around to it for some reason.
(When "the UI text took on its background color", I assume you mean it totally vanished?)

Chris MorganThen secondly with languages there's language switching for the launcher. With the PortableApps.com Launcher this is very easy to put in. Here's the INI data I just wrote for App\AppInfo\Launcher\IronPortable.ini:

Thanks! That's a good workaround for the langfile chaos we had earlier (which SRWare says they will not fix, btw)

Chris MorganLauncher: you shouldn't have the PortableApps.com Launcher source in there. Just get the Template from the Launcher download page as well and apply it to get the Other directory, and run the Generator from the main Launcher download. There's no copying of Launcher source code any more.

OK, thanks. That looks a lot neater than it did before.

Chris MorganEdit: just realised I didn't try installing themes, dictionaries or extensions. I'll need to test that another day, and make sure that they're going in Data and not in the currently empty directories App\Iron\(Dictionaries|extensions).

I just realized I've never tested any of those, either, so I just tried one extension and one theme. Both were properly backed up to Data (within the profile folder). I suspect the App\Iron\extensions folder is for globally-installed extensions.
I didn't try installing any dictionaries, but I don't think they would have gone into Data. At any rate, both App\Iron\extensions and App\Iron\Dictionaries are now properly backed up & restored. Thanks for catching that!

I've also added a new feature to Iron Portable: easier activation of incognito mode. Instead of having to manually edit the launcher to add the --incognito switch, all users need to do is set Incognito=true in IronPortable.ini.

Ah, that would explain it.

No difference at all, purely stylistic Biggrin

I'll take a look at it later today to see what you changed it to.

Good; I expected that that's what would happen. I'll try them out today too just to make sure, then I can give it a clean bill of health.

Just take a look at the description in this thread - I copy & pasted it directly from the new appinfo.ini.

Yep, I'm using a custom PreExec segment with ${ReadUserOverrideConfig}. I actually got all the code straight from PAL: the segment from the PAL core, which told me that I can't use Pre because a custom segment would go before ExecString.nsh; the code for constructing the execution string from ExecString.nsh; and the code for reading settings from the prefs file from SplashScreen.nsh.
Yes, that's documented in help.html; I started documenting it in Other\Source\Readme.txt, but stopped when I saw the message about other options being documented in help.html.

Chris MorganOn it all, well done Smile

Thank you! Smile
Do you think we're ready to go official now?

Yep

All ready. I discovered that the INI file was missing its new lines again - but checked inside the installer and you do have the correct blank lines in there. I believe this is because [Details]:InstallType gets written during installation (to mark English/Multilingual installation) and suspect that Wine is not a respecter of blank lines nor of format to some degree.

Your custom code looks fine - I personally would just use $0 though rather than declare another variable $Incognito. $0-$R9 are perfectly safe to use; each segment hook is entirely self-contained in its use of $0-$R9 and the stack.

Since you didn't comment any further on the issues you mentioned earlier, I assume my fixes were OK?

I'm not trying to nag or anything; I just want to make sure my side of things is ready to go once PAI 2.0.3 is.

Iron Portable users: If you find a bug, now's the time to report it, while I still have time to do another development test or two if necessary.

Thanks!

Bookmarking Issue?

I seem to be experiencing a bookmarking issue with my work and home installations of Iron Portable. At home I'm running the latest development test (5.0.382 Test 2), while at work I've got the previous development test (Test 1).

I have no idea whether this problem is due to Iron itself, the fact I have two different development test versions, or some setting I selected during my initial install way back when. Anyway here is the issue:

Bookmarks from my home PC sync perfectly to my work PC. However any bookmarks I ass to my work installation do not reflect in my home installation. I checked the syncing status at home and it indicated that it synced recently (say last 2 minutes).

Any ideas?

More information requested

Thanks for the report!

I believe this is an Iron bug, not an Iron Portable bug, so I've reported it to SRWare (the developers of Iron). However, since it may be an Iron Portable bug, I'd like to get a little more information from you if possible.

* Please backup your work installation of Iron Portable, then upgrade it to 5.0.382 Development Test 2. Does the problem still occur? (Feel free to go back to 5.0.382 Development Test 1 after testing, although I strongly recommend that you stay at DT2)
* Is there an error message of any kind?
* Is there any kind of firewall, Internet-blocker, etc. at your workplace that could be interfering with the syncing operation?
* What OS are you using, both at home and at work?

Thanks for the report and your cooperation!

Will report back later today.

You actually remind me of what may be the root of the problem. My work has recently implemented OpenDNS over our network and all webmail sites are blocked. I suspect that this may be the reason why the account won't sync properly as syncing is done via ones gmail account.

I will however upgrade and report back later today whether any changes happen at home.

As for your other comments, there are no error messages and both PCs are running XP with SP3.

Last call for bug reports!

If you're having a problem with the latest version Iron Portable, and you want to see the problem addressed before the official release, please let me know as quickly as possible!
Since it probably won't be long until the official release, this is the last call for bug reports. Anything reported after the next version of the PortableApps Installer is released will have to wait, so send those reports in now!

Since the PortableApps Installer has been updated, no more bug reports will be accepted for this version of Iron Portable. Bug reports will still be accepted, but fixes won't be implemented until the next version.
